Mattersburg can be explored through its distinctive buildings and local accounts of history. The parish church, railway viaduct and 70er Haus each offer a different perspective; mills, cultural venues and trails broaden the range of themes. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on architecture and history, event venues, cycling and hiking routes, or natural destinations.

Buildings and History in Mattersburg

The parish church is a Gothic church dedicated to Saint Martin and was first mentioned in 1390. The railway viaduct is considered a landmark of the town. Its 20 pillars and 250-metre length give the structure a distinctive architectural scale. The church and viaduct thus offer two different ways to discover Mattersburg: sacred architectural history on the one hand, and a striking feat of engineering on the other.

The 70er Haus der Geschichten presents local accounts of history. The Mattersburg Cultural Centre offers a distinctive architectural focus of its own: it was built in 1976 to plans by architect Herwig Udo Graf in the Brutalist style. Its programme includes cabaret, concerts and theatre performances. The building has more than 1,000 square metres of event space and can accommodate up to 700 people. A multifunctional foyer is used for exhibitions and receptions. Both the building’s architecture and its event and exhibition functions are therefore central features.

Cultural Venues and Mill History

The BauermĂĽhle Mattersburg provides rooms for concerts, readings and exhibitions. Visits can be arranged by making an individual appointment. If you would like to include the venue in your plans, take this appointment requirement into account. These uses make the BauermĂĽhle another cultural venue, with a different profile from the event programme at the Cultural Centre.

Schattendorf also brings together a range of cultural and historical themes. The Schuh-Mühle was first built in 1498 and operated as a grain mill until 1970. Today it houses the permanent exhibition “The Shots of Schattendorf.” For a circular route to cultural and historical sites and attractions, there is the Kultur.Geschichten.Weg, which is around 2.5 kilometres long. The Archäologie.Wander.Weg Schattendorf is a 7-kilometre hike in and around Schattendorf; archaeological sites can be visited along the way. The approximate lengths and distinct focuses help you tell these two options apart when planning an excursion.

Cycling Routes and Nature

For cyclists, the B32 Rosalia Cycle Route is a 58-kilometre circular route through the Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park. The B33 HexenhĂĽgel Cycle Route runs from Mattersburg via SigleĂź to Zillingtal and connects the B32 with the B11 Leitharadweg. The description of the B33 therefore covers both its route and its connection to two other named cycle routes.

The Rosalia-Kogelberg Nature Park encompasses two nature reserves and the Mattersburger HĂĽgelland Natura 2000 bird sanctuary. The Rohrbacher Teichwiesen offer another nature-related point of interest: specially protected bird species breed there, including the black-crowned night heron, western marsh harrier, little bittern, spotted crake and white stork. The Rosalia Genusstour runs through the nature park and the Rosalia DAC wine-growing region. Alongside cycling and hiking routes, you can therefore explore protected habitats and a route linked to regional food and wine.

More Destinations in Mattersburg District

The Province of Burgenland describes Forchtenstein Castle as a cultural ambassador for Mattersburg District. The castle is located on the foothills of the Rosaliengebirge mountains and offers exhibitions, various guided tours and family events. In Bad Sauerbrunn, the Heiltherme bases its therapies and invigorating treatments on natural healing resources, including a mineral spring and thermal spring, as well as carbon dioxide dry gas.

The history of the Wiesen Festivals also goes back a long way: work to organise an international jazz festival there began in 1976. Over the course of the festival’s history, the programme expanded from jazz and reggae to include world music, rock, punk, electronic music and hip-hop. This development adds a distinctive music history to the historical and architectural themes.
