Schattendorf: Cultural Trails, Nature and Thermal Baths
Accommodation in Schattendorf
Schattendorf offers a variety of reasons to stay: circular routes explore cultural and historical as well as archaeological themes, the Wine & Herbs Trail combines nature stops with an opportunity to sample local products, and the Kogl Trail focuses on cycling. There are also the thermal baths and visits to the Schuh-MĂĽhle by appointment. To plan your stay, you can first consider which activity interests you and what specific conditions apply.
Choose walking trails by theme and duration
The Wine & Herbs Trail is a circular route of about 9 kilometres. It starts at the Schuh-MĂĽhle; the walking time is approximately 2.5 hours. The Kultur.Geschichten.Weg is also a circular route, but is shorter, at around 2.5 kilometres. This trail focuses on cultural and historical sites and places of interest in Schattendorf. The different lengths give you two specific points of reference for planning your day; a walking time is provided for the Wine & Herbs Trail.
The Kultur.Geschichten.Weg includes a Roman tomb in the church wall and the St. John of Nepomuk Chapel. These stops highlight different aspects of the cultural and historical theme. If you are particularly interested in places like these, the circular route offers a way to visit several of them along one trail.
Wine, herbs and nature along the circular trail
At the Grimmingkreuz on Krippelberg, you can sample regional wines and grape juices from the “Wine Treasure Chest” along the Wine & Herbs Trail. Advance booking is required. You can include the tasting as a separate activity in your plans; arrange your booking before relying on this option.
The “Teichwiesen” stop is also on the Wine & Herbs Trail. It offers insights into the nature park, a bird sanctuary rich in species and the valuable plant life. The trail thus combines its wine and herb themes with opportunities to observe nature. Which stops are most interesting to you depends on whether you prefer to focus on the tasting or on the birdlife and plants.
Archaeology and history along the way
In the Hadspitzwald, the Archaeology Hiking Trail has a stop introducing visitors to burial customs of the Early Iron Age. A map there shows the barrow cemetery. On the return route, the trail leads to the Schuh-Mühle: the “8,000 Years of Schattendorf” exhibition displays and describes finds from the archaeological sites visited earlier. The forest stop and the exhibition on the return route thus form part of a shared archaeological focus.
The cross-border circular hike along the Green Belt offers another historical perspective. In Schattendorf, a boundary stone with an information board explains the European Green Belt, the period of division, and the region’s natural environment and history. Those interested in both landscape and history will find a different thematic approach here than at the cultural and historical sites in the village or the archaeological exhibits in the Hadspitzwald.
Cycling, thermal baths and practical planning
The B30 “Kogl Trail” cycle route is 34 kilometres long and almost entirely paved. By a water reservoir, there is a rest stop with panoramic views of Klingenbach, the Leitha Mountains and the state capital, Eisenstadt. The route and the rest stop provide two different points of reference for your cycling trip: its length and the viewpoint along the way.
The Schattendorf thermal baths have heated pools and a water slide. If you are planning a visit that includes swimming, these are the specific facilities mentioned. The Schuh-MĂĽhle and the 1927 exhibition can be visited at any time by appointment. Arrange your visit in advance, as appointment arrangements may change.
You can book a ride on the Burgenland call-and-collect taxi BAST by phone. During operating hours, it travels between stops and to and from public transport stops if no regular bus runs 30 minutes before or after your desired departure time. Check the current operating and booking conditions when planning. This will help you coordinate your route, appointment and transport with the conditions for each service.
