Tabor Castle is located in Neuhaus am Klausenbach, in the Raab Tri-Border Nature Park, in the border region between Austria, Hungary and Slovenia. Border history, castle ruins and themed trails shape the range of destinations for day trips. For your plans, you can consider a circular walking route, a cycling route through the hill country, apple-themed attractions and the seasonal outdoor pool.

Castle Ruins, History and Views

The castle ruins are easy to reach from Neuhaus on foot. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. Remains of the former outer bailey are still preserved in the forest around the ruins. From the observation tower, the view stretches across the Neuhaus hill country and Slovenia, onward to Tabor and Kapfenstein castles, and as far as the Styrian hill country. The ruins offer both traces of history and expansive views across the border landscape.

A historical exhibition has been on display at the castle ruins since 2025. It covers the ruins as well as events in the municipality and surrounding municipalities. Check whether the exhibition is currently open before your visit. Border history is also explored along the “Old Border” trail, which focuses on repeated border changes and the belt of castles built in response to conflicts.

Explore on Foot and by Bike

The “Old Border” circular trail starts and ends at Tabor Castle and is 8 kilometres long. Its fixed start and end point makes it easy to plan a complete loop, while the trail’s theme gives it a historical focus. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before your hike.

An approximately 43-kilometre paved cycling route through the Neuhaus hill country is hilly. It offers views of partly unspoilt nature and passes Tabor Castle in Neuhaus/Klausenbach. Compared with the 8-kilometre walking loop, it is a considerably longer touring option and is explicitly hilly. The B 70 “Raab Valley – Neuhaus Hill Country” cycling route runs through the picturesque recreation area.

Apple Trail and Varietal Garden

The Apple Trail offers families a “Culinary Journey Through the Apple Year.” Since 1998, it has provided information about the importance of fruit for health and about traditional fruit varieties. The trail thus combines a seasonal look at apples with information about fruit and the diversity of varieties.

In the district of Kalch, the central part of the varietal garden, which is open to visitors, is located at the Lendl family’s farm in Obstparadies. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. Groups can book guided tours of the varietal garden, including a cider tasting in the Mostothek, by prior arrangement. If you are planning this combination, confirm the current arrangements in advance. The Apple Trail and the varietal garden offer different highlights: the former focuses on the apple year and traditional fruit varieties, while a pre-booked group tour of the latter can be complemented by a cider tasting.

Outdoor Pool in the Village Centre

The Neuhaus am Klausenbach outdoor pool is right in the village centre and has a play and sunbathing lawn. The swimming season is seasonal, so take this into account when planning your trip.
