Rudersdorf combines a historically shaped townscape with the landscape along the Lafnitz and regional food production. The town’s history and its natural features can be considered as distinct areas of focus.

Architectural Heritage in the Townscape

Many houses in Rudersdorf have elaborately decorated Gründerzeit façades, most of which date from around the turn of the 20th century. Most of these historic façades have been preserved and carefully restored. As a result, not only individual buildings but also the façades shape the town’s architectural character.

The protected buildings listed in the Federal Monuments Authority’s inventory of June 19, 2026, include the former castle and Sattler textile factory, the Finkhaus farmstead, the Protestant school and prayer house, and the Catholic parish church of St. Florian. The church was completed in 1862 and dedicated to St. Florian. The castle developed from a manorial estate. In 1750, Count Emmerich Batthyany had a manor house and a Meierhof built in Rudersdorf. The dates refer to different historical periods: the manor house and Meierhof in 1750, the completed church in 1862, and many façades from around 1900.

The Lafnitz and Trails Through the Landscape

A nature trail in Rudersdorf leads through river floodplains, mixed forests, and vineyards. The different landscape features give the trail a tangible connection to nature, distinct from the town’s architectural character. Above the Fritz Mill, the Lafnitz’s meanders have been preserved as far as Deutsch Kaltenbrunn. Meanders are winding river courses; their preserved extent provides a clear point of reference in the landscape.

Regional Production

Traditional pumpkin seed oil has been produced at the Fritz Mill in Rudersdorf for over 100 years. Visitors can see how it is made, taste pumpkin seed oil, and buy it there. This connects a local product with specific visitor experiences. If you are interested in how it is made, the mill is a good place to visit during your stay.

The long-established family business Hirmann Vinegar Manufactory and Distillery, from Rudersdorf-Berg, also produces regional specialties: vinegars and fine spirits made from fruit grown in traditionally managed orchards. Together, these examples of production showcase different local specialties—pumpkin seed oil on the one hand, and vinegar and fine spirits on the other.
