Donald offers several distinct ways to experience the town during your stay: museums bring its history to life, while trails and nature reserves draw attention to river landscapes, plants and animals. You can therefore shape your stay around different interests – such as historical collections, a cycling and walking trail through Donald, or a nature-focused theme. Each stop has its own focus rather than showing the same side of the town.

Museums and Local History

In 2009, the Court House Museum became an official repository for Indigenous cultural heritage artefacts. It also houses numerous relics from former Donald businesses. The museum archive includes, among other things, indexed and bound editions of the newspapers Donald Express and Donald Times. This brings together objects from the town’s former business community and newspaper collections in one place. If you are interested in local history, these collections offer different points of entry: one through relics from former businesses, the other through editions of the two newspapers.

The Historic Police Camp offers a different historical perspective. Its four-room house was built in Richardson Crossing in 1869; the settlement was later renamed Donald. The Donald History Group and the Donald Lions Club restored the building. The former name Richardson Crossing and its later renaming to Donald are part of the site’s history, as is the restoration of the house. Unlike the collections at the Court House Museum, the focus here is on a single building and its historical place name.

The Donald Agricultural Museum adds another perspective, with historical machinery used in the district. Some of it was made by local blacksmiths. The collection therefore includes both machinery associated with the district’s former uses and examples of local craftsmanship. Along with the archive and the Historic Police Camp house, the museum offers another way to explore Donald’s past – this time through equipment and its origins.

By the River and in Nature

The Federation Walking Trail is a shared cycling and walking trail that runs along the Richardson River through the whole of Donald. It offers a different focus from the museums: rather than collections or a historic building, the river and the route through town take centre stage. If you are weighing up your interests in cultural history and outdoor activity, you can consider the trail as a standalone activity alongside museum visits.

Scilley's Island combines a planted landscape with a specific nature theme. The area has been planted with numerous species of native plants. At the same time, the nature reserve provides a refuge for the migratory Nankeen Night Heron and a family of Black-tailed Wallabies. The focus here is therefore not on local history, but on native plantings and the animals mentioned. This makes it a distinct addition to the museums and riverside trail.

Another distinctive feature is Bullock's Head. From a viewing platform by the river, you can see a natural formation on a dead eucalyptus tree that resembles a bullock’s head. The feature is shaped by the tree itself, making it different from both the historical collections and the plant and animal life on Scilley's Island. If you would like to include several themes in your stay, Donald offers a choice of historical sites and distinctive natural features.
