On a journey between Melbourne and Adelaide, Nhill is a stopover on the road or rail route. Before your trip, consider which of these aspects of the town matter most to you. These differences can help you choose what to explore in Nhill based on your interests, before looking for a hotel for your stay.

Nhill Lake: Water Activities and Walking Trails

Nhill Lake holds water year-round and is used for fishing, water skiing and swimming. These three activities offer different experiences: fishing, getting out on the water and swimming. Walking trails also run through the Nhill Lake area, including a loop around the lake and connections to Victoria Street and Jaypex Park. This means you can plan both water activities and walks. You can combine a visit to the lake with activities on the water as well as a walk.

Parkrun and Literature at Jaypex Park

Parkrun takes place at Jaypex Park every Saturday morning at 8 am. If this event is important to your trip, check ahead: recurring event times can change.

The John Shaw Neilson Cottage is also located in Jaypex Park. It reconstructs the two original rooms of the house where the Nhill-based poet John Shaw Neilson was born. This connects a specific place in the park with the poet’s living quarters and literary history.

Aviation History in Nhill

The Nhill Aviation Heritage Centre is located at the original site of the RAAF training base. It displays five aircraft, including an almost fully preserved Avro Anson, a rebuilt Wirraway, an airworthy Tiger Moth and a rare deSoutter. The aircraft showcase different features: preservation, reconstruction, airworthiness and rarity. There is also an original Second World War Link Trainer flight simulator. The aircraft and simulator therefore offer different types of exhibits. Individual exhibits may change. If a particular aircraft is important to your trip, check ahead to see which aircraft are currently on display.

Local Art and Karen Handicrafts

Gallery Central in the centre of Nhill displays and sells works by local artists and craftspeople. Paw Po Products on Nhill’s main street sells traditional handwoven Karen textiles: aprons, oven mitts, bags, scarves and table runners. Visitors can watch women sewing and weaving there and read their stories on information boards. The two places offer different insights into creative work: Gallery Central combines an exhibition with the sale of local works, while at Paw Po Products, the making of the textiles and the women’s stories are also part of the visitor experience. This lets you discover contemporary local art and traditional Karen weaving as distinct cultural themes.
