Terang: Walking Trails, Local History and Market
Accommodation in Terang
Terang offers several different options for your stay: walking trails, local history, racing and a regular market. Depending on your interests, you can focus your visit on time outdoors, historic sites or a particular market day. For planning, the market’s seasonal break and changing race dates are the main things to bear in mind.
Walking Trails by the Lake and Wetland
There is a walking trail at Lake Terang. Another trail runs through the southern part of the Terang College grounds and is designed as a wetland walk. If you plan to take this trail, bear in mind that conditions may change.
Local History and Historic Sites
The Terang & District Historical Society Museum is located in the Dixie School Building on the junior campus of Terang College. Its collection includes photographs, newspapers, maps, documents, cemetery records and memorabilia from Terang and the surrounding district. As visitor arrangements may change, it is advisable to check current visiting options before your visit.
Thomson Memorial Church was designed in 1894, modelled on Scots Church Melbourne, and built from stone from the Barrabool Hills. Terang Centenary Park, with several notable tree specimens, is located near the church. Another historic feature is Terang’s oldest avenue of English oaks, planted on High Street before the 1890s. There is also a bandstand on High Street Avenue.
The railway’s history can also be traced through two dates: the railway line reached Terang in 1887, and Terang railway station was built in 1889. The years mark two distinct stages—the arrival of the line and the later construction of the station.
Racing and Dates
Terang has two racing venues with different focuses. Terang Racecourse is a thoroughbred racing track; Dalvui Raceway is a harness racing track. If you would like to plan your stay around a race, check the dates for your intended visit: race dates vary. This distinguishes the two venues by their respective types of racing, without treating their event dates as the same.
Terang Market and Seasonal Planning
The Terang Market is held on the first Saturday of each month and takes a seasonal winter break. Market-day offerings include local honey, homemade baked goods, produce and preserves. Refreshments include egg-and-bacon rolls, morning tea and barbecue dishes; the selection may vary from one market day to another. If the market is a key reason for your trip, check the date for your stay and take the winter break into account.
You can explore Terang through a range of themes, depending on your interests: take a walk around Lake Terang or through the wetland at the college; the museum, church, trees and railway station offer different points of historical interest; and the market and racing bring specific dates into your plans.
