Wonthaggi combines a distinctive theme from industrial history with several natural areas and trails. At its heart is the State Coal Mine, the only historic coal mine experience in the Southern Hemisphere. Other highlights include Wonthaggi Wetlands Reserve in the town centre, Tank Hill Reserve and Baxters Wetland. Each offers something different: a historic mine, a loop trail with specific distance and time details, birdwatching in bushland, and a wetland with its own birdwatching hide. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on mining history, a walk with a more clearly defined duration, or nature watching.

Mining history at the State Coal Mine

At the State Coal Mine, visitors can combine above-ground attractions with a guided tour of the historic underground coal mine. There is also a surface heritage trail. This gives you two different ways to explore the mine: a guided underground tour and a surface trail. Tour availability and booking conditions may change; check the latest information when planning your visit.

The mine operated from 1909 to 1968. It produced almost 17 million tonnes of coal for Victoria’s industry and railways. The State Coal Mine therefore represents both the history of a particular mine and the role of coal in Victoria’s industrial and railway history.

Wetland loop trail and rail trail

Wonthaggi Wetlands Reserve has a loop trail through a wetland in the centre of Wonthaggi. The loop is 2.2 kilometres long and takes about 45 minutes to walk. Its length and approximate duration give you a clear guide when planning a walk. Trail conditions may change; check them before your visit. The loop is a clearly measured option among Wonthaggi’s nature attractions; other natural areas focus on bushland, birdwatching or a revegetation project.

The Wonthaggi East Area Rail Trail connects to Wonthaggi State Coal Mine and leads to the Poppet Head in Apex Park. This offers a different route from the loop at Wetlands Reserve: the rail trail connects the mine with a named destination, while the loop is defined by its distance and approximate walking time. Rail trail conditions and access may change; check these before your visit.

Birdwatching at two natural areas

If you’re interested in birdwatching, Tank Hill Reserve and Baxters Wetland offer different experiences. Tank Hill has native bushland where visitors can spot a wide variety of bird species. Baxters Wetland is a revegetation project with its own birdwatching hide. You can choose between a bushland setting with a variety of bird species and a revegetation project with a dedicated viewing hide. Along with the loop at Wonthaggi Wetlands Reserve, these offer another choice: a measured loop, a place associated with birdwatching, or a project that includes a hide.
