Hornsby: Gardens, Walking Trails and Parkland
Accommodation in Hornsby
Hornsby offers a range of options to help you plan your stay: an award-winning camellia garden, a distinctive water-powered clock, a trail through forest and over sandstone ridges, and glimpses of the Hornsby Park landscape. When looking for a hotel in Hornsby, you can consider which aspects of the area interest you most. The following attractions and places each have their own focus, from garden culture to water-based and outdoor activities.
Gardens and distinctive landmarks
Lisgar Gardens is a hillside garden in the heart of Hornsby, known for its variety of camellias. In 2020, the International Camellia Society named it an “International Camellia Garden of Excellence”. Its hillside setting and camellias give the garden its distinctive character; the award adds international recognition to these features.
The Hornsby Water Sculpture offers a very different point of interest. It is the world’s largest water-powered pendulum clock and weighs 20 tonnes. While Lisgar Gardens centres on plant diversity and garden design, the sculpture combines art with an engineering principle: water powers the pendulum clock. These are two distinct interests side by side—botanical design and a striking public artwork.
Walking trails and parkland
The Blue Gum Walk starts on Rosemead Road in Hornsby and ends at Ginger Meggs Park on Valley Road. These two endpoints help you orient yourself when including the trail in your plans. Along the way, the route passes through lush, tall forest and over rugged sandstone ridges. Forest and rock together shape the trail’s landscape character.
At Hornsby Park, the Southern Lookout offers sweeping views of the ancient volcanic landscape, the former quarry and the surrounding bushland. The view therefore takes in both natural landscape features and the former quarry. Unlike the Blue Gum Walk, which passes through forest and over sandstone, the focus here is on the expansive outlook. Weather and possible closures may affect access; check the relevant notices before your visit.
The Hornsby Mountain Bike Trail runs for six kilometres through Old Mans Valley. This makes mountain biking a distinct activity in Hornsby alongside the Blue Gum Walk. The trail’s length gives you a specific reference point for planning your rides.
The Crusher Plant Precinct is also among the experiences available at Hornsby Park. An update dated 28 March 2026 reported that the area, which had just been completed at the time, had been opened to the public. Check the current notices about closures before your visit.
Swimming and water facilities
Hornsby Aquatic and Leisure Centre has a heated 50-metre outdoor pool with eight lanes, used for lap swimming and water polo. There is also a heated leisure pool with step-free entry to a walking area, as well as water play features for children. The two pools are clearly suited to different uses: the outdoor pool is designed for laps and water polo, while the leisure pool offers a walking area and water play features. As facility features may change during operation, check the current pool information before your visit.
