Hawks Nest: Beaches, Myall River and Yacaaba
Accommodation in Hawks Nest
Hawks Nest offers a variety of ways to enjoy a coastal and waterside stay. The Myall River flows into Port Stephens Bay at Hawks Nest. Jimmys Beach curves for five kilometres from this river mouth to Yacaaba Headland. The river mouth, bay and beach are therefore central geographical features of the area.
Beaches with different appeal
Jimmys Beach is sheltered from the open sea and protected from summer nor’easter winds. Clear water and views across Port Stephens are also part of its character. At the southern end of Bennetts Beach, by contrast, there is surf suitable for surfing and bodyboarding. If you’re planning a beach day, these features can help you decide: here, it’s the sheltered location; there, it’s the surf for wave sports.
Hiking at Yacaaba Headland
The Yacaaba Headland walking track climbs steeply from the southern end of Bennetts Beach, passing through angophoras, banksias and grass trees. From the forested ridge, coastal views extend to Seal Rocks and Tomaree Headland. A challenging trail from Bennetts Beach leads to the summit of Yaccaba and offers views of Port Stephens. When planning your day, the steep climb and challenging nature of the trail are as relevant as the viewpoints mentioned. This hiking option combines a specific challenge with views of prominent features of the coastal landscape.
Water activities and river excursions
The Myall River is known for its tranquil, scenic beauty. Boating, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, swimming and sightseeing cruises are different ways to spend time on the water. Compared with the surf at the southern end of Bennetts Beach, the river offers several ways to enjoy time on the water. You can choose between activities where you’re out on the water yourself and a sightseeing cruise, or use the river for fishing and swimming.
Cycling, golf and a place to eat
There are two named options in Hawks Nest for bike and fishing gear. Reels and Wheels rents high-quality e-bikes and high-quality fishing gear for all ages. Hawks Nest Bike Hire is a self-service kiosk with eight bikes, including children’s bikes and bikes with child seats. Rental options and equipment may change, so check in advance for the current selection and availability.
Golf is another option: Hawks Nest Golf Club has an all-weather 18-hole course. Sando's welcomes members and visitors and adds a place to eat to the leisure options. Along with the beaches, river and walking tracks, these activities make for a stay that can be tailored to your interests, whether you’re looking for nature, activity or time on the water.
