Tha Ngam: Cultural Sites and Festivals
Accommodation in Tha Ngam
For a culture-focused travel decision, Tha Ngam offers two distinct points of interest: historical associations with the area and community-oriented festivals. The named sites are in Tambon Tha Ngam; the events also relate to this tambon. Wat Krachet is associated with historical accounts and other named sites, while the timing is the main consideration for the festivals.
Wat Krachet and historical associations with the area
One traditional account dates the construction of Wat Krachet to 1814 (B.E. 2357), during the reign of Rama II. Alongside this is an explicitly tentative historical connection: the area where Wat Krachet is located in Tambon Tha Ngam is associated with King Taksin’s journey before the fall of Ayutthaya. According to the account, Taksin crossed the Prachin Buri River at Dan Kob Chae; the present-day location in the Wat Krachet area is also tentative. Thus, two distinct claims stand side by side: a traditional construction date and an uncertain association with the history of the journey.
Wat Krachet in Tambon Tha Ngam is home to an archaeological site and a community museum; the Phutthasanghaneramit Bridge is also located there. The name Wat Krachet therefore brings together associations with a temple, archaeology, a museum, and a bridge. Another named site is the Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Building, located at Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital in Tambon Tha Ngam, Mueang Prachin Buri District, Prachin Buri Province.
Festivals and approximate dates
For the 2018–2021 fiscal years, Songkran events were scheduled in Tambon Tha Ngam around April and organized by government agencies and individual communities. For the same period, a candle procession marking the Buddhist beginning of the Rains Retreat was scheduled there around July, with government agencies, schools, and communities taking part. For the same period, a festival at Wat Liap in Tambon Tha Ngam, organized by residents to mark the end of the Buddhist Rains Retreat, was scheduled around October. For the same period, the Loy Krathong festival in Tambon Tha Ngam was scheduled around November.
The approximate months mentioned therefore span April through November. The events differ in purpose and participants: alongside Songkran are a procession marking the beginning and a festival marking the end of the Buddhist Rains Retreat, as well as Loy Krathong. The months are approximate indications, not specific festival dates. If a festival is a deciding factor for your trip, check the current date before setting your travel dates.
Cultural interests and travel dates
The construction date and the Taksin account give Wat Krachet a historical association, while the festival information primarily raises the question of when to travel. This makes a practical difference to your planning: interest in local history can be considered independently of the festival months; if you are traveling for a particular festival, confirm the current date before booking.
