If you are considering Bang Yang as a destination for a stay, the cultural traditions in the surrounding area may also shape your choice. One notable point of interest is the water procession of Wat Intharam. At its center is Luang Pho Khum, a Buddha image; the veneration of the image, the journey on the water and other ceremonial activities give the tradition its distinctive character. This makes the procession a specific cultural consideration when deciding whether Bang Yang matches your interests.

Luang Pho Khum and the Water Procession

Wat Intharam is located near Bang Yang, in Ban Sang District, Prachin Buri Province. Its Mondop Luang Pho Khum houses a Buddha image in the Maravijaya posture. It is 0.7 metres wide and 1 metre high. Its creation is estimated to date to the late Ayutthaya period or the early Rattanakosin period.

The water procession is regarded as a cultural tradition handed down among the residents of Tambon Bang Yang, and is estimated to be more than 100 years old. According to tradition, it takes place every year after the end of Buddhist Lent, on the second day of the waning moon in the eleventh lunar month. If you would like to time your stay to coincide with the procession, check the dates for the relevant year, as the timing follows the lunar calendar.

Procession and Ceremonies

During the procession, Luang Pho Khum is carried on a palanquin and on a boat platform decorated with fresh flowers, gold-coloured fabric and Buddhist flags. The image travels by boat along the Prachin Buri River, allowing people on both banks to pay their respects and receive holy water.

The procession includes a ceremonial dance in honour of Luang Pho Khum and a beauty contest for rowing boats. It also features a meal offering to monks and a communal Kathin robe ceremony on the water. These elements have different focuses: the ceremonial dance honours Luang Pho Khum, while the contest is for the rowing boats; the meal offering and robe ceremony are religious observances.
