Suncheon: Temples, Garden Landscapes and Coastal Wetlands
Accommodation in Suncheon
Suncheon offers a range of options for a stay: a temple in the city center, historic sites and landscapes in the Suncheon-si area, and market and cultural offerings. If you’re looking for a hotel in Suncheon, the experiences you want to visit can provide a starting point for planning.
Temples and Historic Sites
Heungryunsa Temple is located in Jukdobong Park in the city center of Suncheon. It is a branch temple of Hwaeomsa Temple; Hwaeomsa is the 19th local temple of the Jogye Order. Seonamsa and Songgwangsa temples are also located on Mount Jogyesan in Suncheon-si. These places offer different architectural and religious connections and should not be confused with the temple in the city center.
At Seonamsa, the path from the entrance to the temple grounds is approximately one kilometer long. The grounds are set in a lush forest with various trees that are several hundred years old. Two three-story stone pagodas stand in front of the main hall, Daeungjeon. The arched Seungseongyo Bridge, which rests on natural rock, is also located in front of the temple. Nearby are Ilweolseok Boulder and the peaks of Wolchulbong, Janggunbong and Gitdaebong.
Songgwangsa operates a Buddhist museum displaying the temple’s cultural properties, as well as Templestay programs. The temple is home to four National Treasures and 26 Treasures. Naganeupseong offers a different perspective on the region’s history: the former administrative town extended across Dongnae-ri, Namnae-ri and Seonae-ri in Nagan-myeon. Its traditional village landscape preserves a fortress, government buildings and private homes; the traditional way of life has continued since the Joseon period (1392–1910). The walled town covers more than 59,504 square meters. Its wall, made of square-cut stones, is four meters high, three to four meters wide and 1,410 meters long in total.
Garden and Coastal Wetland
Suncheonman Bay is one of the world’s five most important coastal wetlands. It stretches along a three-kilometer waterway and includes extensive tidal flats and reed beds. These serve as wintering and breeding grounds for various bird species, including hooded cranes. From the observation point at the bay, visitors can watch sunsets over the S-shaped waterway. Check current access conditions before your visit.
Suncheonman National Garden is located in Dosa-dong, Suncheon-si, and covers 1.12 million square meters. It is South Korea’s first national garden. Tulips and royal azaleas bloom there in spring. Together, the National Garden and Suncheonman Wetland are home to 790,000 trees of 505 species and 3.15 million flowers of 113 species. An unmanned Personal Rapid Transit system runs for 4.64 kilometers between the garden and the section by the Suncheon Literary Museum. Check current operating information before riding.
Markets and Cultural Offerings
Suncheon Aretjang Market is less than one kilometer from Suncheon KTX Station. The five-day market takes place on the 2nd, 7th, 12th, 17th, 22nd and 27th of each month. There is also a night market on Fridays and Saturdays, with snacks, pancakes, fried chicken and other food. The market offers fresh agricultural produce and seafood from Suncheon and the surrounding area; individual vendors’ selections may vary. Check market dates before your trip, as the market schedule may change.
Suncheon Filming Location in Suncheon-si was an outdoor filming site for the 2006 TV series “Love and Ambition.” It features recreated houses from the 1960s and 1980s. The alleys can be explored on foot and are suitable for taking photographs. Other offerings include listening to nostalgic music, an exhibition on film production, and experiences in a vintage classroom and school uniforms. Individual offerings may change.
At Suncheon Traditional Wild Tea House in Seungju-eup, visitors can take part in Darye, learn traditional tea etiquette and tea preparation, sample tea cookies, and learn about the tea ceremony. Program details may also change.
Plan Your Visits and Hotel Choice
Temple architecture, a historic village landscape, a garden and wetland, and market and cultural offerings each provide a different focus. As you plan, consider which of these visits you want to shape your stay. When looking for a hotel in Suncheon, you can then assess the accommodation’s location in relation to your specific plans.
