Mokpo can be explored through several distinct themes: hiking trails and views at Yudalsan, the Gatbawi rock formation, and museums covering natural, urban, and maritime history. If you are considering Mokpo as an overnight destination, these themes can help you structure your decision around your travel interests. The city offers concrete differences in trail distances, scenery, and exhibitions.

Yudalsan: Trails, Views, and Art

Yudalsan Mountain offers views of Mokpo and the Dadohae Sea. It is also a habitat for the rare Albizia Kalkara plant. The 2.7-kilometer Yudalsan Scenic Road also runs around the mountain. Views, nature, and mountain trails thus offer different perspectives on the same landscape.

The two routes described differ considerably in both time and distance. Route 1 is 2 kilometers long and takes approximately 40 minutes. It begins at the entrance to Yudalsan and passes Dalseonggak, Yuseonggak, Madangbawi, and Ildeungbawi. Route 2 also starts at the entrance, runs via Soyojeong and Ideungbawi, is 1 kilometer long, and takes approximately 20 minutes. Route 2 is therefore about half the length and takes about half the stated walking time of Route 1.

Another way to see the mountain and its surroundings from a broader perspective is the Mokpo Marine Cable Car. It starts at the North Port Terminal and travels over the summit of Yudalsan, as well as over Mokpo and the Dadohae Sea, to Gohado Island. The route is 3.23 kilometers long; a round trip takes approximately 40 minutes. Since the duration depends on operating conditions, check the latest operating information if you plan to include the ride in your schedule.

Outdoor art is also part of the Yudalsan theme: Yudalsan Sculpture Park is located just below the Ideungbawi rock at the mountain’s summit. It features 104 works of art on the themes of nature, culture, and sculpture, and was Korea’s first outdoor sculpture park. Here, a cultural highlight and the mountain landscape come together in the same area of interest.

Gatbawi: Rock Formation and the Story Behind Its Name

The Gatbawi rock in Mokpo is a natural sandstone and tafoni formation near the mouth of the Yeongsangang River, where fresh water flows into the sea. It consists of two separate formations, 8 and 6 meters high, respectively. The name Gatbawi is said to refer to a shape resembling two men wearing traditional Korean hats, called gat. This is a traditional explanation of the name, not a confirmed account of its origin.

Gatbawi was officially designated a Natural Monument on April 27, 2009. Its geology, distinctive shape, and associated interpretation of its name give the site several layers of significance. If you are interested in landscape formations and their cultural interpretation when choosing a destination, you can consider Gatbawi alongside the views and nature at Yudalsan.

Museums Between Maritime Heritage and Urban History

The Mokpo Maritime Heritage Exhibition Center has four permanent exhibition halls. The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage has an outdoor exhibition area and a special exhibition hall. Both institutions focus on maritime heritage, but the described formats of their exhibition spaces already differ: four permanent halls at one, and an outdoor area plus a special exhibition hall at the other.

The Mokpo Modern History Museum focuses on the city’s history. Its exhibition divides Mokpo’s history into seven themes. These include the production and exploitation of various goods during the Japanese colonial period from 1910 to 1945, as well as miniature reconstructions of Mokpo’s streets at the time. Mokpo Modern History Museum No. 1 is the oldest building in Mokpo and a testament to Korea’s modern and contemporary history. These two aspects give travelers different points of reference: the exhibition’s themes and street scenes, and the historical significance of a building.

The Mokpo Natural History Museum displays rare dinosaur fossils and cultural artifacts. It is located in Gatbawi Culture Town, a major tourist attraction in Mokpo. Its natural history and cultural exhibits complement the offerings on urban and maritime history, without every museum covering the same subject.

When deciding where to stay, you can think about which aspect you want to shape your visit to Mokpo: the comparable walking times at Yudalsan, the landscape and geology, or the different museum themes, from maritime heritage and urban history to natural history. This range of themes can be a starting point when you look for hotels in Mokpo for your stay.
