Changwon: City Gardens, Art and Culture
Accommodation in Changwon
Changwon offers different ways to enjoy a stay: city gardens and walking paths sit alongside museums, hands-on activities and ways to explore the city. In the Changwon-si area, you can focus on nature, art, urban history or technology.
City Gardens and Walking Paths
The Changwon Arboretum in Seongsan-gu features 14 themed gardens. These include the Sky Garden, the European Garden, the Forest of Children's Songs, the Flower Hill and the Rock Garden. Exhibition halls, a cactus greenhouse, the Byeokcheon Fountain, a pond and a rest area complement the garden grounds. The greenhouse is home to 6,621 cacti and various subtropical plants; the number of cacti may change over time. The arboretum also offers a free tour about the history of the forest and the role of the arboretum. Check whether the tour is available before your visit.
The Rose Park in Seongsan-gu is an urban park with rose beds and walking paths. The roses bloom in May, although the timing may vary. Changwon Garosu-gil in Uichang-gu combines a promenade lined with metasequoias with small cafés, galleries and art shops. It is suitable for a walk or a tea break. The metasequoias were planted as street trees in 1982.
Art, History and Technology
The Gyeongnam Art Museum in Uichang-gu, Changwon-si, hosts large and small exhibitions for the general public. It also holds special exhibitions with hands-on activities for children; dates vary by exhibition. The museum also serves as a center for scientific research and education. In addition to visiting the exhibitions, you can learn about these institutional roles.
Changwon House reopened to the public in 1985 after Changwon-si purchased the property and commissioned remodeling and restoration work. The lake in Yongji Lake Park also has a historical function: it was created during the Joseon period as a reservoir for storing irrigation water. Those interested in the development of the city and its green spaces will find a range of historical topics here—from a house that reopened to the public to a lake's former use.
The Changwon Science Experience Center is for visitors who want to explore technology hands-on. They can engage practically with topics in bioscience, energy science and robotics. Check the current operating details before your trip.
Exploring the City and Things to Do
Since September 2017, eight-seat rechargeable electric boats have been available for water-based recreation on Yongji Lake in Changwon-si. Visitors can steer the boats themselves. The City Tour offers a different way to explore: it takes visitors to major sights in Changwon-si on an open-top double-decker bus; a professional city guide accompanies guests on every ride. One ticket lets you use the tour as often as you like for a day. Passengers can get off at stops, visit sights and continue later. Check the current operating and ticket details before your ride.
The two activities mainly differ in how you take part: you steer the electric boats yourself, while a city guide accompanies you on the City Tour. Cultural events, including concerts, are often held at the Yongji Outdoor Stage on weekends. Check specific event dates before your trip.
