Discover Tongyeong-Si: Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Tongyeong-Si
If you are considering Tongyeong-Si as a destination for your hotel stay, its cultural sites, landscapes, and activities can help you identify your travel interests. The options range from murals and digital displays to short hikes and maritime experiences. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether culture, nature, or water sports will be your main focus.
Art, History, and Digital Displays
Dongpirang was revitalized as an art-filled hillside village when its walls were painted with murals in 2007. From there, you can look out over the sea and Gangguan Harbor. The murals and the view give the place two distinct points of interest: both the village’s artistic design and the views of the sea and harbor.
DPIRANG is a digital theme park in Nammangsan Park in Tongyeong. Its 15 illuminated paths, each with a different theme, span a total of 1.3 kilometers. The installations can be updated. The media show tells the story of the missing murals from Dongpirang and Seopirang, bringing them back to life. DPIRANG thus combines illuminated paths with a narrated story about the murals.
Tongyeong Undersea Tunnel also offers a specific historical point of interest: it is Asia’s first undersea tunnel, measuring 483 meters long and 5 meters wide. Another form of digital presentation can be found at Gangguan. There, a digital display board presents Tongyeong’s culture in 3D. The murals, media show, digital display board, and tunnel therefore differ considerably in form and cultural context.
Mireuksan and Mireukdo
Mireuksan’s landscape includes lush forests, valleys with clear water, unusually shaped rocks, and rock caves. The mountain has well-maintained trails suited to short hikes. Mireuksan also offers views of the Korean archipelago; how far you can see depends on the weather. If you would like to combine nature and exercise, you will find both a described landscape and trails for shorter hikes here.
Mireukdo Island is part of Hallyeohaesang National Park. The Mireukdo Special Tourism Zone offers yacht services as well as windsurfing, kayaking, and water skiing. The Tongyeong Cable Car is 1,975 meters long and allows visitors to bring their pets. Check the pet policy before your trip; operating conditions may change.
Festival and Cuisine
The Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival includes a reenactment of the Battle of Hansan, traditional cultural experiences for visitors of all ages, and maritime leisure sports activities. As the program may change between editions, check the dates and announced events for the edition taking place during your trip.
In Tongyeong-Si, Yonggung Ttukbaegi serves various seafood stews. The restaurant uses only selected fresh seafood and prepares the dishes to order to preserve the ingredients’ natural flavors. Menu and operating details may change; if you would like to include the restaurant in your plans, check the latest information.
