Pangasinan: Pilgrimage Sites, Coasts and Islands
Accommodation in Pangasinan
Pangasinan offers a range of different travel interests: Manaoag is known for its pilgrimage traditions and church visits, Lingayen combines historic sites with local festival culture, while Bolinao and Agno are known for their coastal scenery and landscapes. At Hundred Islands National Park, islands and water activities shape the visitor experience. If you are planning a stay, these highlights can help you prioritize the places and experiences that interest you.
Pilgrimage Traditions and History
In Manaoag, the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Manaoag is a pilgrimage site. The main feast day of Our Lady of Manaoag falls on the third Wednesday of Easter; the general feast day is celebrated during the month of October, the month of the Rosary. The Galicayo Festival is also held in honor of Our Lady of Manaoag. At the Our Lady of Manaoag Church, you can attend Mass, light candles and pray, and explore the Rosary Park, the Candle Gallery and the museum.
Casa Real in Lingayen once served as the seat of the provincial government. The historic Casa Real, beside the municipal hall, houses the Banaan Pangasinan Provincial Museum. It offers insights into the time of Princess Urduja, the galleon trade, the American colonial period and World War II. Exhibits include artifacts, artworks, art installations and interactive features. Sison Auditorium hosts some of the most important events in Pangasinan province. Lingayen Baywalk is one of the newer attractions in the province's capital municipality.
Local Festival Culture and Cuisine
Bagoong is Lingayen's “One Town One Product,” and the municipality has held the Bagoong Festival since 2011. In Bolinao, the fishing industry inspired the Mangunguna Festival; its name translates as “Fisherfolk Festival.” A culinary specialty from Bolinao is Binungey: sweet sticky rice slowly cooked in bamboo over charcoal or wood. Local traditions thus bring together a product, fishing and a distinctive cooking method.
Coasts and Landscapes
The beach scenery also varies across Pangasinan: the west has long white-sand beaches, while the central part has beaches with soft gray sand. Patar Beach in Bolinao has powdery white sand and coastal stretches lined with coconut palms. Bolinao is considered the home of giant clams. The Balingasay River is described as the cleanest river in Region 1.
Off the coast of Agno are the large, mushroom-shaped Umbrella Rocks of Sabangan. The annual Umbrella Rocks Festival celebrates this geological rock formation. The claim that the first Catholic Mass in the Philippines was held at St. James the Great Church in Bolinao is associated with the church. This site adds a historical tradition to the natural attractions, while preserving it as a claim.
Islands and Activities
Hundred Islands National Park comprises around 120 scenic limestone islands rising from crystal-clear blue waters. Visitors can go island hopping or paddle a kayak through calm waters. Pangasinan therefore offers a range of highlights, including religious visits and museums as well as coastal scenery, local cuisine and water activities.
