Ilocos Sur brings together historic sites, churches, waterfalls, and landscapes. The history of the historic city of Vigan City is particularly striking: founded in the 16th century, it is considered the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial city in Asia.

Explore Vigan’s Old Town on Foot or by Kalesa

The historic city area comprises 233 buildings arranged along a grid of 25 streets. On Calle Crisologo, Spanish-influenced architecture is evident in centuries-old houses that have been preserved over the centuries. Visitors can explore the street on foot or by kalesa, a horse-drawn carriage. Vehicle traffic is prohibited on Calle Crisologo, allowing visitors to experience the cobblestones on foot. Check the local regulations before your visit.

For those interested in traditional crafts, Pagburnayan in Vigan City offers a glimpse into the making of red clay pots known as burnay. The Syquia Mansion offers a different perspective on the city’s history: the property has been converted into a public museum. On display are artifacts belonging to the family and the late president, as well as paintings and furniture. Visitors can learn about local history at the Crisologo Museum.

At Plaza Salcedo in Vigan, the Dancing Fountain combines a light and water show with traditional and contemporary music. Check show times locally. The Ilocos Sur Festival takes place every year from January to February; exact program dates may vary.

Churches, Waterfalls, and Views

Santa Maria Church, also known as Nuestra Señora dela Asuncion Church, is one of four churches in the Philippines recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites and exemplifying the Baroque style. It stands on a hill overlooking the town. Visitors climb three flights of stairs to reach the church.

The Pinsal Falls in Santa Maria comprise two waterfalls about 85 feet high that plunge into a crystal-clear pool. The clear water around the falls is suitable for a short swim; conditions on site may vary. A hike to the top of the falls leads to a viewpoint overlooking the entire town. Check current trail conditions before making the ascent.

Bantay Bell Tower also offers a viewpoint: standing on its hill since 1591, it affords views of Ilocos Sur. Mapisi Rock showcases a different landform. Natural forces have split the rock formation down the middle, from where you can see the sea.

Local Cuisine as Part of the Trip

In Ilocos Sur, visitors can try Vigan longganisa. Availability at individual vendors may vary. Vigan empanadas are orange, deep-fried pastries filled with vegetables.

When planning, you can start by considering which experiences you’d like to focus on: Vigan’s historic streets and museums, the church and climb in Santa Maria, or the waterfalls and viewpoints. This helps you tailor your trip to the different facets of Ilocos Sur.
