Ilocos: History, Nature and the Sea
Accommodation in Ilocos
Ilocos brings together history, nature and the sea. Vigan is considered the best-preserved example in Asia of a planned Spanish colonial town. Exploring the region offers opportunities to discover a range of cultural themes, outdoor activities and local traditions.
Historic Sites and Religious Culture
In Vigan, the town’s history takes center stage through its planned Spanish colonial layout. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Santa Maria is part of the World Heritage site Baroque Churches of the Philippines. In Pangasinan, the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Manaoag is a pilgrimage site visited by worshippers throughout the year. These places offer different points of interest for travelers interested in history and religious culture.
The Ma-Cho Temple adds its own cultural note: this Taoist landmark in La Union is dedicated to Mazu, the Chinese goddess of the sea. In San Fernando City, the Pindangan Ruins and the La Union Botanical Garden are among the visitor attractions. The places worth visiting thus include religious and historical sites as well as a botanical garden.
Trekking and Outdoor Activities
The Arosip Ecotrail is a downhill trekking route in the highland barangay of Bacnotan. The route is listed as 6.5 kilometers, or 45 minutes. Along the way are the Zim-sim-ug Twin Falls, Padtok Falls and Tekdag-Aso Falls. Preparation includes registering at the Barangay Hall; local residents or tour guides assist visitors along the ecotrail. Allow time for registration and check local guidance before your visit.
The Hundred Islands in Pangasinan offer a different selection of activities: they are promoted for island hopping, snorkeling and kayaking. Unlike the downhill trekking route of the Arosip Ecotrail, the focus here is on activities in and on the water. Which option suits your trip depends on whether you want to focus on a trek or one of the promoted water activities.
Local Products and Traditions
At the Naguilian Agricultural Complex, visitors can see how Naguilian’s original Iloco basi—a sugarcane wine—is made. At Lomboy Farms, visitors could pick fruit directly on the farm. These two descriptions represent different activities related to agricultural products: learning about the production of a local drink and picking fruit on a farm.
In Naguilian, the annual Basi Festival celebrates traditional Ilocano sugarcane wine. The program includes themed street dances, cultural performances and community activities. As the exact festival dates may vary, check the dates before your trip.
Travel Planning Information
San Fernando City is the starting and ending point for buses on the Manila–Laoag City route. If this connection is an option for your arrival, check the schedule for your travel dates. This lets you work the bus journey into your plans without assuming a particular departure time.
The Ilocos region brings together history, nature and the sea; the travel experiences mentioned range from Vigan’s town history and religious sites to trekking, island activities and local traditions. When planning, take the relevant visiting conditions into account—especially registration for the Arosip Ecotrail—as well as the dates of the Basi Festival.
