Perak offers a range of reasons to visit: museum and architectural history, traditional crafts, UNESCO World Heritage, island coastlines and protected habitats. For planning, it helps to consider places according to their specific highlights. Taiping combines cultural and wildlife themes, while Pangkor and Royal Belum each offer different landscapes and experiences.

Taiping: Museum, Heritage Trail and Zoo

The Perak Museum in Taiping was built in 1883 and is considered the first museum established in Malaysia. Its current displays comprise four galleries and an outdoor exhibition. The exhibition concept therefore includes both galleries and an outdoor area; the year it was built and its historical significance make the museum’s history a clear highlight.

The Taiping Heritage Trail also includes the building of the Larut Matang & Selama Land and District Office. The Taiping Zoo and Night Safari offer a different theme: Tourism Perak describes the zoo as Malaysia’s oldest and the Night Safari as the first of its kind. The Taiping Zoo and Night Safari are home to 180 animal species; this number may change as the collections change.

Crafts and Landmarks

Kuala Kangsar is Perak’s royal town and lies on the Perak River. Souvenirs shaped by Perak’s traditions and heritage include Labu Sayong, an earthenware water vessel, gold-thread embroidery and rattan crafts. The examples already differ in their materials and forms: a clay vessel, gold-thread embroidery and rattan items. These specific objects and names make the craft traditions tangible.

The Lenggong Valley was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 30 June 2012. In Teluk Intan, the Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan was built in 1885; it is 25.2 metres tall and is now considered a prominent landmark and a major tourist attraction in the town. The World Heritage site and the tower each provide a distinct, clearly identified highlight for cultural visits and sightseeing.

Habitats and Wildlife

Royal Belum is considered a biodiversity hotspot in Malaysia and is home to diverse ecosystems and habitats. Royal Belum State Park is also an important habitat for Seladang, also known as gaur, and Asian elephants. For nature-focused travel, both the diversity of habitats and the specific animal species named here are highlights. A riverboat trip across Temengor Lake is one of the recommended activities in Royal Belum.

Orang Utan Island is a research facility and sanctuary dedicated to the protection and study of orangutans. Feeding orangutans is one of the recommended experiences on the island. The two nature experiences are quite distinct: Royal Belum combines diverse habitats with a riverboat trip, while Orang Utan Island focuses on the protection and study of one animal group.

Pangkor and Getting There

Pangkor Island is in the Manjung District and is considered Perak’s most visited tropical island destination. Beaches and fishing villages shape the island’s character as described here. To get to Pangkor, first travel to Lumut and then take the ferry to the island. Coastal and village scenery are therefore part of the trip planning, along with the ferry connection.

Planning Your Trip and Hotel

When looking for hotels in Perak, you can choose where to stay based on the experiences that matter to you. For Pangkor, plan for the ferry connection via Lumut. For a riverboat trip in Royal Belum, check the operators and availability; it is also advisable to check in advance whether a feeding session is available on Orang Utan Island.
