Hutan Melintang: Mosques and River History
Accommodation in Hutan Melintang
Hutan Melintang can be explored through its historical connections to mosques and the Sungai Bernam. The construction histories of the mosques sit alongside the history of former landing places and passenger traffic on the river. This offers several points of interest for planning your trip: a specific mosque construction date, a change of location, or the Sungai Bernam’s former use as a transport route.
Mosques: Construction Dates and Location History
Masjid Hutan Melintang originally stood in the village of Kampung Teluk on the banks of the Sungai Bernam. It was demolished at its original location, later moved to its present site, and enlarged there.
Masjid Jamek Pekan Hutan Melintang was built on 25 June 1953. Its specific construction date is a key point of interest, while the history of Masjid Hutan Melintang is shaped by its relocation and enlargement. A construction date provides a point in time, while the history of the site describes a sequence of changes.
Masjid Kampung Kota and the River
The land for Masjid Kampung Kota was donated as a waqf by Raja Kahar/Raja Long and his family. The mosque is about 30 metres from the Sungai Bernam. The donation is part of the land’s history, while the approximate distance specifies the mosque’s location by the river.
A jetty or landing place once stood on the riverbank near Masjid Kampung Kota. Residents travelled from there to their homes and to Sabak Bernam and Teluk Intan. The historical connection therefore extends from routes to their own homes to journeys to the two named places.
The Jetty: Passenger Traffic and Fishing
Until the early 1970s, the Hutan Melintang jetty was a busy departure point for passenger boat trips across the Sungai Bernam to Sungai Air Tawar and Parit Baharu in Selangor. This historical account names both the river traffic and the destinations on the other side.
A report dated 19 July 2016 placed the jetty on the banks of the Sungai Bernam in Hutan Melintang, about four kilometres from the town of Simpang Empat in Hutan Melintang. A 2016 description reported that the former passenger jetty had been completely converted into a fishing landing, where fishing boats docked and unloaded their catch.
Putting the Dates in Context
The dates serve different purposes: 25 June 1953 is the construction date of Masjid Jamek Pekan Hutan Melintang. The early 1970s refer to the period up to which the jetty was a busy passenger departure point; 2016 is the year of a report on its location and description of its fishing use. A construction date, a historical period of use, and the year of a later description can thus be distinguished. The Sungai Bernam is both a location reference for the mosques and a route for historical passenger trips. If you plan to visit the jetty today, please check its current accessibility in advance.
