Ananyevo brings together nature and culture on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul. The Issyk-Kul State Nature Reserve is located in the village; the Balykchy–Anan’yevo–Karakol road also passes through it. The village’s religious history includes the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, a monument to Saint Irakli, and regular pilgrimages to his grave. These different points of interest can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Nature in and around Ananyevo

The Issyk-Kul State Nature Reserve is located in Ananyevo. On July 18, 2025, a project was announced for the protected area with the aim of supporting ecotourism and nature conservation. If this project is important to your travel plans, check its current status in advance.

A wildlife rehabilitation center supported by NABU was established in 2002 in the mountains near Ananyevo. A 2017 description reports that the center housed lynxes and rare birds as well as snow leopards. The activities described at the time included releasing recovered animals when they were judged capable of surviving in the wild. This brings two nature-related points of interest together: the reserve in the village and the rehabilitation of individual wild animals in the mountains near Ananyevo. If you are considering visiting the center, check access arrangements in advance; the animals it houses may also have changed since the description was published.

Church, Pilgrimage Tradition, and Local History

The Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is located at 21 Sovetsky Lane. A monument to Saint Irakli stands in the Orthodox cemetery in Ananyevo; it was erected on September 5, 2015. This is distinct from the Saint’s grave, which is also associated with Ananyevo: pilgrims from Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Russia visit it regularly. The frequency of visits and access arrangements may change. So check current access before planning a pilgrimage.

A museum and a monument in Ananyevo are also associated with Nikolai Ananyev. If you plan to visit the museum, check visiting arrangements in advance.
