Grigorievka lies on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul, right next to Grigorievsky Gorge, also known as the Chon-Ak-Suu Valley. If you are looking for a hotel in Grigorievka, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on during your trip: would you mainly like to hike or ride in the gorge, experience seasonal glimpses of Kyrgyz traditions, or plan to continue along the mountain route?

Gorge, lakes and trails

The Chon-Ak-Suu Valley stretches for 35 kilometers and descends from the Kungey Ala-Too near Grigorievka. Dense fir forests, glacial waters and high, snow-covered peaks define the landscape. Three mountain lakes lie on the western side of the valley. The middle lake is between the jailoo summer pastures, and all three lakes are home to high-altitude trout. The upper lake is located at an altitude of about 3,500 meters and is surrounded by alpine meadows. Beyond the last lake, the forest also gives way to alpine meadows at around 3,500 meters.

You can explore the gorge on foot or on horseback. Forests, summer pastures and alpine meadows give the mountain valley a variety of landscapes. Archaeological finds add a long history to the natural setting, including burials dating from the 5th to 3rd centuries BC.

Seasonal yurts and local culture

From late June to late September, yurts in the nearby gorge offer an opportunity to learn about Kyrgyz nomadic traditions. These include demonstrations of crafts and horsemanship, folk music and koumiss; visitors can also take part in setting up a yurt. This seasonal window is limited and may be a deciding factor in planning your trip.

In the lower part of the gorge, seasonal yurts and simple cafés operate in summer. Seasonal availability may vary; food selection, sanitary conditions and payment methods differ from one establishment to another. As seasonal, location-dependent options, traditional yurts may offer the opportunity to try trout and Kyrgyz dishes.

At-Jailoo is an area used for grazing. A yurt by the roadside is not automatically a café or guest accommodation. Ask permission before photographing or entering yurts.

Local history and respectful visits

The gorge’s name is associated with Grigory Lytikov, who helped found Grigorievka in the early 20th century. The house locally called Brezhnev’s Dacha is considered a local Soviet-era legend, not a documented museum. Stories about its ownership, construction and visitors are not sufficiently substantiated. Do not enter the property without explicit permission, and do not expect an open museum; access rules may change.

Getting there and route planning

A shared taxi from Cholpon-Ata can reach the gorge. Since availability may vary seasonally, confirm the ride in advance if you are relying on it. On the northern Balykchy–Karakol road, drivers turn north toward Grigorievka after Cholpon-Ata.

A prepared vehicle can take the Kok-Bel route without having to return to Issyk-Kul on the same road afterward. Check road and weather conditions before crossing. Cyclists on the Kok-Bel route need working brakes and extra water; rain, fords and washed-out sections can affect the route.
