An Overview of Mizoram’s Mountain Landscape

Steep cliffs, waterfalls, forests and bamboo groves define Mizoram, a mountainous region with abundant wildlife and picturesque villages with stilt houses. The landscape brings together striking natural features and settled places. For trip planning, it is worth distinguishing between different highlights: alongside forests and mountain landscapes, there are wildlife reserves, historic sites and a festival celebrated in March.

In Aizawl, Lalsavunga Park covers 120 acres; the associated mountain range stretches for one kilometre. Phawngpui National Park is different in scale: it covers about 50 km² and offers a scenic trekking experience through forested areas. The two destinations therefore have different emphases: Lalsavunga is characterised by its park area and mountain range, while Phawngpui offers trekking through forested areas.

Dampa Tiger Reserve is a protected wildlife area in Mamit District in northwestern Mizoram, bordering Tripura and Bangladesh. Murlen National Park is one of the few remaining refuges of the Vavu, Mizoram’s state bird, also known as Mrs Hume’s Pheasant. Vantawng Falls, the highest waterfall in Mizoram, offers a different kind of landscape. Biate is known for its tea garden.

Activities and Places with a Distinct Character

Castle of Beino, also called Castle of Bawinu, is known as the “Grand Canyon of Mizoram”; the area also offers hikes over difficult terrain. A motorboat can also be rented in the area. Check availability locally. Chuanhnuai has been a paragliding site since 2012 and lies between Serchhip and Keitum Village on National Highway NH 54. Keivawm Puk is a cave in Ngaizawl Village in Khawzawl District; its natural landscape draws visitors to explore it.

These destinations appeal to different travel interests: forest trekking, hiking over difficult terrain, paragliding and exploring a cave are different ways to engage with Mizoram’s landscape. At Castle of Beino, the option of renting a motorboat is also available in the area; check locally for specific availability.

Cultural Sites, History and Festival Season

Kawtchhuah Ropui is an archaeological site in Mizoram and the first site in the state to be protected by the Archaeological Survey of India. More than 171 menhirs stand along an old path, bearing depictions of people, animals and floral motifs. The number of stones and the variety of motifs give the site a tangible historical and visual dimension.
