Andhra Pradesh offers a variety of reasons to plan a trip: temples and Buddhist sites, historic memorials, rock landscapes and habitats for migratory birds. If you are looking for a hotel, first consider which of these themes matter most for your stay. Each attraction has its own focus, from distinctive architectural details to nature and cultural experiences.

Temples and Buddhist heritage

The Veerabhadra Temple in Lepakshi is listed among the centrally protected monuments and sites under the jurisdiction of the Amaravati Circle in Andhra Pradesh. Its Vijayanagara architecture and carvings depicting a dancing deity give the temple a distinctive artistic character. One unique feature is the hanging pillar: it does not rest fully on the ground, leaving enough space to pass a sheet of paper or a small twig underneath.

Adurru is a 2,400-year-old Buddhist site in East Godavari district, near the Vainetaya River. Excavations there uncovered several stupas, chaityas and viharas. Bojjannakonda is also a historic Buddhist site, comprising six rock-cut caves, sculpted panels and a monolithic stupa. In Amaravati, the Mahachaitya stupa features intricate carvings from the 4th century BC depicting scenes from the life of Buddha. The Undavalli Caves, meanwhile, date from the 4th to 5th centuries and contain elaborate sculptures and a large reclining statue of Vishnu.

Temples, forts and memorials

Temples include the Sri Talpagiri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Nellore, on the banks of the Pennar and dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, and the Kanaka Durga Temple on Indrakeeladri Hill, overlooking the Krishna River. Near Kailasakona Waterfall stands a temple dedicated to Shiva and Parvathi. The ancient Shiva Temple in Panchadarla takes its name from five springs fed by a natural source.

The forts also differ in their historical associations. Kondaveedu is an ancient hill fort in Kondaveedu village, in Guntur district. The construction of Kondapalli Fort is associated with Prolaya Vema Reddy in the 14th century AD. The Pinakini Satyagraha Ashramam, also known as Pallipadu Gandhi Ashramam, commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s connection to Nellore on the banks of the Penna.

Rock landscapes, trails and water

Orvakallu Rock Garden is a 1,000-acre park. Its igneous rock formations are the main attraction, and there are also developed walking trails. The Borra Caves in the Ananthagiri Hills feature magnificent stalagmite and stalactite formations. At 270 feet, Talakona is the highest waterfall in Andhra Pradesh. Araku Valley reaches an elevation of 2,990 feet and includes Chaparai Waterfall, also called Dumbriguda Falls.

Water also shapes some of the places where nature watching and exploration take centre stage. Kondakarla Sanctuary offers nature excursions on walks and boat rides on Kondakarla Lake. Pulicat Lake is an important habitat for migratory birds, while Kolleru Lake serves as a resting place for them. Migratory painted storks and Indian pond herons are found at Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary. Rare fishing cats find refuge in the mangroves along the Godavari.

Culture and practical information

In Machilipatnam, Kalamkari textiles are associated with the use of natural dyes. The village of Machilipatnam has venues where you can experience Kuchipudi dance up close. The Araku Tribal Museum presents the heritage and way of life of the region’s people. The state is also associated with a culinary speciality: the Tirupati Laddu from the Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala has geographical indication status.

APSRTC public buses connect Visakhapatnam with major destinations across the state. Check the timetable before travelling, as specific routes and departure times may change.
