Tripura brings together historic buildings and cultural sites with lakes, mountain landscapes and vibrant traditions. When planning your trip, you can first consider which of these aspects interests you most: architecture and history, nature, recurring festivals, or crafts and cuisine. This can also help you tailor your search for a hotel in Tripura to the experiences you would like to enjoy during your stay.

Palaces, Temples and Archaeological Sites

Neermahal is a former royal palace of the erstwhile Kingdom of Tripura, situated in Rudrasagar Lake. King Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur commissioned its construction in 1930; the palace was completed in 1938. Its architecture features both Hindu and Muslim styles. The combination of royal history, a lake setting and diverse architectural traditions makes Neermahal a distinctive historical highlight of the trip.

The Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur is also part of the state’s historical and religious heritage. Maharaja Dhanya Manikya Debbarma had it built in 1501. The temple is also known as the Tripureswari Temple and is one of the 51 Shakti Pithas. At Pilak, cultural sites date from the 8th to the 12th century. They bear witness to the peaceful coexistence of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Rock-cut images and terracotta plaques can be found at various locations there.

Chabimura reveals another distinctive form of cultural heritage: rock reliefs of Hindu deities adorn a steep, hilly cliff on the banks of the Gomati. The carvings date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Together with the archaeological sites and the temple, they offer a multifaceted view of Tripura’s religious and artistic traditions.

Lakes, Wildlife and Mountain Views

Dumboor Lake covers about 41 square kilometres. Its waterscape, surrounded by lush green vegetation, is dotted with 48 islands. Rudrasagar Lake is considered suitable for boating and picnics. Both lakes give the trip a scenic focus, while their described features differ: at Dumboor, the islands and their vegetation shape the landscape; at Rudrasagar, boating and picnics are also associated with the lake.

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary covers about 18.53 square kilometres. Its features include an artificial lake, a natural botanical garden, a magic garden and an enclosure for clouded leopards. Around 150 bird species live in the sanctuary’s surroundings; migratory birds arrive in winter. If you are interested in birdlife, you can take this seasonal difference into account when planning your trip. The Jampui Hills, by contrast, offer sweeping panoramic views across the mountain landscape.

Festivals, Activities and Regional Traditions

The grand Ashokastami Mela takes place every April in Unakoti and is attended by thousands of pilgrims. At Tirthamukh, near Dumboor Lake, the Pous Sankranti Mela is celebrated every year on 14 January. The two festivals differ both in date and in the location specified. If either is important to your trip, check the current event dates before making plans.

Tripura offers trekking trails through dense forests. This adds another way to experience the landscape alongside its viewpoints and lakes.

Handloom weaving and traditional crafts made from cane and bamboo produce textiles and handmade goods such as furniture and lampshades. Riha and Risa are traditional textiles of Tripura, made by tribal women and passed down through generations. The cuisine also features a range of regional specialities, including boiled Hilsa with mustard seeds and green chillies, Chuak rice wine, the millet drink Apong, and Muya Awandru, Kosoi Bwtwi, Muya bai Wahan, Gudok and the spicy Mosdeng serma chutney. Culture, nature and culinary traditions offer different ways to choose your destination and a suitable hotel option.
