Religious sites, museums, protected areas and seasonal events offer different ways to plan a trip to Haryana. First consider whether pilgrimage sites, cultural history, nature or an event date will be the focus of your stay.

Pilgrimage Sites and Museums in Kurukshetra

Brahma Sarovar is 3,600 feet long, 1,500 feet wide and up to 45 feet deep. Religious worship rituals take place here twice a day: at sunrise and sunset. Another religious site is Jyotisar Temple. It is home to a 5,000-year-old banyan tree associated with Lord Krishna's imparting of the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. According to tradition, Sannihit Sarovar is the meeting point of seven Saraswati rivers.

Kurukshetra's museums offer different perspectives. Kurukshetra Panorama and Science Centre features a lifelike panorama of the Mahabharata battle, as well as astronomical displays and exhibits on scientific phenomena. Sri Krishna Museum has six galleries showcasing the life of Lord Krishna, as well as the Geeta and the Mahabharata. This allows you to explore religious and cultural themes from different perspectives at various places in the city.

Kurukshetra Junction railway station is a useful point of reference for travel: it is connected to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar. Kurukshetra is also accessible via National Highway 44, which connects the city with major cities in the region. Check the current timetable for specific train connections.

Forests, Wetlands and Birdlife

Kalesar National Park is characterised by dense sal forests and diverse wildlife. It has three motorised safari routes with a total length of approximately 16 km. You can hire a jeep for safari visits. Check the required safari permits and arrangements before travelling.

Haryana is also home to a variety of wetlands and protected areas. Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary is a man-made freshwater wetland and the largest wetland in the state. At Bhindawas Bird Sanctuary, a 12 km vehicle route runs around the lake; check its condition locally. Sultanpur National Park is a Ramsar site of international importance and provides a refuge for more than 250 resident and migratory bird species. The details about Sultanpur and Bhindawas point to two different ways to experience nature and birdwatching: a sanctuary for numerous bird species and a vast wetland with a route around the lake.

History and Craftsmanship

Panipat combines historic sites with a glimpse of handloom weaving. The Kabuli Bagh Mosque was built by Babur after his victory; the tomb of Ibrahim Lodi marks the resting place of the last Sultan of Delhi. Panipat Museum in Binjhol displays, among other things, antiquities, inscriptions, sculptures, weapons and armour, pottery, archival documents, jewellery, and art and craft objects. Visits to local weaving workshops offer insights into the handloom tradition of Panipat's weaving industry.

Another historic destination is Jal Mahal, built by Shah Kuli Khan in 1591. The palace stands in the middle of a large pond and is accessible by a bridge. If you are planning a visit, confirm current visitor access locally.

Seasonal Events and Activities

Events offer additional, time-specific reasons to travel. The Surajkund International Crafts Mela, held annually in February in Faridabad, features live cultural performances, regional specialities and opportunities to meet craftspeople. The Baisakhi Mela is held every year on 13 and 14 April by Haryana Tourism at Pinjore Gardens. The Mango Mela takes place in June and July at Yadavindra Gardens in Pinjore. Check the specific event dates and programme before travelling.

For a different focus, consider the Morni Hills: two extensive lakes there lie at the same water level and are separated by a small hill. Morni Hills is suitable for trekking and camping.
