Sirmaur: Churdhar, Nature and Temples
Accommodation in Sirmaur
Churdhar Peak lies in Sirmaur at an altitude of 11,965 feet. Around this high point, alpine flora, a temple below the summit and a two-day trekking route come together. Elsewhere, Renuka Lake, religious sites on the banks of the Yamuna, and historic sites and walking routes shape the itinerary. For a trip with a hotel stay, this offers a range of options: nature and trekking, cultural history, or a combination of both.
Churdhar: Peak, Trekking Route and Temple
The Churdhar Peak trekking route covers 36 km over two days via Nohradhar. The best-known route to the summit also leads from Nohradhar in the Sirmaur area. If you choose the summit as the focus of your trip, allow for the stated two days as a separate block of time. Alpine flora is widespread on the Himalayan slopes of Churdhar.
Below the summit stands Srigul Temple, a single-storey, square building with a deodar wood roof. The temple houses a lingam dedicated to Shiva, Chooreshwar Mahadev. Churdhar thus brings together a religious site and trekking route alongside the scenic character of the slopes—three distinct aspects of the same peak area.
Renuka Lake and the Nature of Sirmaur
Renuka Lake lies in Sirmaur District at 672 metres above sea level. The hills around the lake are home to a diverse range of plant and animal life. The district's natural attractions also include Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary, which covers 402.80 hectares. Renuka Forest is classified as dry mixed deciduous forest and dry sal forest.
These details highlight different aspects of the landscape: the lake's elevation, the diversity of the surrounding hills and the named forest types. If you are planning to go boating or fishing at Renuka Lake, check availability before your visit.
Paonta Sahib and Trilokpur
Paonta Sahib lies on the banks of the Yamuna River. Gurudwara Paonta Sahib was built in memory of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru; the Dasam Granth was also written there. For rail travel, Dehradun is the nearest railway junction to Paonta Sahib, 45 km away.
Bala Sundri Temple stands in Trilokpur. It was built in 1573 by Raja Dip Parkash. A fair is held in the town twice a year, in the months of Chaitra and Asvina, from the eighth to the fourteenth day of each month's bright fortnight. If you are travelling specifically for a fair, check the exact festival dates for your travel year.
The fair at Renuka also features a distinctive procession tradition: a bronze statue of Parasu Rama from Jamu is brought in a silver palanquin, accompanied by musical instruments.
Nahan and Historic Sites
The old palace in the centre of Nahan attracts visitors from nearby places. Ranital Bagh garden lies below the palace. For walks in the town, Villa Round and Military Round are two named routes; both offer views of the surrounding areas.
The Jaitak Hills were the site of a major battle between British troops and the Gurkhas. Jaitak can be reached from Jamta via a climb of about 3 km. Jamta lies about 19 km north of Nahan on the Nahan–Dadahu motorable road.
The rulers of the former state of Sirmour built a fort on Haripur Dhar to secure the borders with the neighbouring areas of Jubbal. The fort later fell into disuse. This site adds a historical perspective to the religious and natural themes.
Fossils at Shivalik Fossil Park
Shivalik Fossil Park displays life-size models of prehistoric animals. A small museum also exhibits fossil vertebrate finds from the park's collection. The models and finds offer two different ways to explore the subject: an illustrative depiction of the animals and the study of fossil remains.
