Temples, Buddhist monuments, lace-making and bird migration are among the distinct highlights of West Godavari. Two timing details may also help with your travel plans: the seasonal period for certain rituals at Natta-Rameswaram Temple and the migration schedule of birds at Kolleru Lake.

Religious sites and their special timing

Palakollu is home to Ksheerarama, one of the five Pancharama Kshetras sacred to the Hindu god Shiva. Another Pancharama temple is Gunupudi Someswara Janardhana Swamy Temple in Bhimavaram. East of the temple is a Pushkarini pond, also called Soma Gundam. These two sites offer different points of interest for travelers interested in Shiva temples and religious traditions.

Sri Vasavi Kanyaka Parameswari Temple stands in Penugonda, a town in West Godavari district in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Penugonda Kshetram is regarded as the Kashi of the Vysyas and as a sacred place for them. Another historical account connects West Godavari with Jaganmatha-Sri-Mavullamma Temple: its story came to light in 1880.

At Natta-Rameswaram Temple, pilgrims can perform Abhishekam and Puja only during the Telugu month of Vaisakham, approximately from mid-May to June. If you wish to include these rituals in your trip, take this approximate time window into account when planning.

Buddhist monuments in Guntupalli

The Buddhist remains at Guntupalli date from the 3rd–2nd century BCE to the 5th–6th century CE. The monuments include a rock-cut temple or Vritta-Chaitya, a large and a small monastery, a brick Chaitya, a ruined Mandapa, a stone stupa and a group of votive stupas. These different types of buildings and monuments give the site its archaeological character. The Buddhist monuments of Guntupalli are listed among the centrally protected monuments and sites for West Godavari.

The rock-cut caves of Guntupalli are accessible by a motorable road. The nearest railway station is in Eluru. If you plan to travel by train, check the current schedules for your specific travel dates.

Lace-making and bird migration

In Narasapur, women have been making lace with crochet hooks and thread for more than a century. The lace market is a destination for lace enthusiasts. This craft offers a distinct cultural highlight alongside temple visits and archaeological sites.

Kolleru Lake is a bird sanctuary; part of the lake lies in West Godavari district. Migratory birds visit the lake from October and return between March and April. The number of birds can vary. For nature enthusiasts, this seasonal difference makes the timing of a trip an important consideration: bird migration has a different seasonal window from the religious rituals at Natta-Rameswaram Temple.

The West Godavari Tourism Information System provides information on beaches and their facilities, as well as river tourism, including boat trips and booking options. If you plan to use one of these services, check the system's latest information, as operational details may change.
