East Godavari brings together Buddhist history, the Godavari and diverse natural landscapes. When planning a hotel stay, you can first consider whether archaeological sites and collections or mangroves, forests and waterfalls should play a bigger part in your trip. These different themes give the destination a varied character.

Buddhist History and Cityscape

One of the notable historic sites is Adurru, also locally known as DubarajuGudi. The Buddhist site is 2,400 years old and is located in the Razole Taluk of East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh. Its Mahastupa has a wheel-shaped plan and a diameter of 17 feet. The stupa’s age, religious classification and distinctive shape make it a specific point of interest for anyone interested in Buddhist architecture.

Rajamahendravaram also shapes the district’s cultural identity: the city is more than 1,000 years old and remains the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh. Near Rajahmundry, the Godavari appears mighty and majestic. Together, these places offer different perspectives on history and the river landscape.

Collections and Art

Near the Godavari Bund, the Rallabandi Museum has a collection of 6,984 books. The Gowthami Library preserves thousands of old and rare books. The Damerla Art Gallery presents a different artistic direction, housing rare paintings by Raja Ravi Varma and Damerla Rama Rao. The cultural offering thus ranges from book collections to the works of the two named artists.

The Sir Arthur Cotton Museum in Dowleswaram explains the construction of the present-day Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage. It adds a subject in the history of engineering to the museums and collections. If you want to focus your hotel stay mainly on culture, you can weigh these different areas of interest against one another when planning.

Mangroves, Forests and Water

Coringa Sanctuary was designated a wildlife sanctuary to protect the estuary’s mangrove vegetation and covers about 235 km². This extensive mangrove area is one of the district’s other natural attractions. The forests of Maredumilli are characterized by rich biodiversity, semi-evergreen forests and undulating terrain; they are part of the Eastern Ghats.

In the Maredumilli Community Conservation & Eco Tourism Area, numerous streams flow over undulating rock through dense forests. Rampa Waterfalls are located in the semi-evergreen forests of the Agency area and carry water year-round. Mangroves, forests and waterfalls thus represent different natural attractions that you can prioritize separately when planning your trip.

Andhra Pradesh in a Broader Context

The wider destination of Andhra Pradesh offers other distinct cultural themes. The Veerabhadra Temple in Lepakshi features Vijayanagara architecture and carvings depicting a dancing deity. Its hanging pillar does not rest fully on the ground; a sheet of paper or a small twig can be passed underneath it. The Undavalli Caves date from the 4th to 5th centuries and contain intricate sculptures as well as a large reclining statue of Vishnu. These examples broaden the picture of Andhra Pradesh, while the places mentioned earlier set the scene for East Godavari.
