In Nalgonda District, Buddhist heritage sites, temple architecture, museum collections, and the reservoir on the Krishna River offer a range of travel experiences. When planning, first consider whether archaeological sites and collections or the waterscape at Nagarjuna Sagar Dam will shape your stay. This will help you choose destinations that suit your interests.

Buddhist Heritage in Nandikonda and Nagarjuna Sagar

Nandikonda is located on the banks of the Krishna River in Nalgonda District and is part of Telangana’s Buddhist tour circuit. Excavations in Nandikonda uncovered Buddhist structures, including pillared halls and monasteries. Ruins of a fort dating from the Ikshvaku dynasty are also located at the same site. The focus here is therefore on different historical remains: Buddhist structures on the one hand and fort ruins on the other.

The Buddhist Heritage Museum is located in Buddhavanam Buddhist Theme Park in Nagarjuna Sagar, also in Nalgonda District. Its galleries display Gandhara and Pala sculptures, reproductions of Ajanta paintings, Buddhist tankas, and ceremonial bronzes. The collection thus brings together a range of art forms and materials. If you are interested in Buddhist art, the museum offers a different perspective from the excavated structures at Nandikonda.

Temples and Museum in Panagal

The Pachala Someswara Temple is located in Panagal. Four shrines are arranged around a large shared rectangular mandapam. The temple also has 70 pillars with intricate carvings depicting stories of Vishnu and Shiva. The layout and reliefs draw attention to two different aspects of the complex: its spatial arrangement and the narrative motifs of the stonework.

The Chaya Someswara Temple is also in Panagal and was built by the Cholas in the 11th to 12th century. It is known for the shadow of one of its pillars falling on the main Shivalingam continuously throughout the day; this is considered the explanation for its name. The pillars also bear reliefs depicting episodes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. The temple thus brings together a historical context, a distinctive shadow phenomenon, and visual storytelling.

Panagal is approximately 4 km from the administrative headquarters of Nalgonda District and is easily accessible by road. The District Heritage Museum is also located there and was established in February 1982. Its exhibits date from the 2nd to the 18th century AD. The collections include sculptures, prehistoric tools, coins, bronzes, beads, and weapons, as well as inscribed copper plates. The wide time span and variety of objects make the museum a distinct attraction alongside the temples.

Fort and Waterscape

Deverakonda Fort is located in the village of Deverakonda in Nalgonda District and was built around the 13th and 14th centuries. The site contains Rama and Shiva temples. The approximate construction period provides a historical point of reference, while the temples add religious structures to the picture of the fort complex.

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is located in Nalgonda District and was built across the Krishna River. Dense greenery surrounds the dam and contributes to its impressive views. Telangana Tourism operates a regular cruise service that travels to Nagarjunasagar Dam after heavy inflows, when water levels are sufficient. Motorboats operate between the reservoir at Nagarjuna Sagar and the island of Nagarjunakonda. A simple motorboat trip to Nagarjunakonda takes approximately 45 minutes; the duration may vary depending on operating conditions. As boat services are subject to conditions, check current options before planning your trip.
