Explore Wuxi through several distinct themes: Buddhist culture, the city’s history along its waterways, museum collections and the landscapes of Lake Taihu. If you’re looking for a hotel in Wuxi, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip. Each of the featured places has its own character—from the great Buddha statue in Mashan to gardens, bodies of water and historic lanes.

Buddhist Culture and Museum Collections

Lingshan Shengjing in Mashan is a national 5A-rated tourist attraction and a Buddhist culture-themed park. It brings together Buddhist culture and the natural landscape of Wuxi’s Mashan area. A prominent feature of the complex is the 88-meter-tall bronze standing statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, known as the Lingshan Buddha. If you want to make Buddhist culture the focus of your trip, this site offers a clear point of reference.

The Wuxi Museum offers another way to explore the city’s culture. Its collection comprises nearly 40,000 cultural artifacts, including old paintings and calligraphy, purple clay teapots, Huishan clay figurines, and modern records of revolutionary, industrial and economic history. The museum features 15 permanent exhibitions and devotes four focus areas to culture, history, science and technology, and film education. As a cultural center, it brings together exhibitions, research and art appreciation. Its collection and the way its exhibitions are organized make the museum a destination in its own right for travelers who want to discover Wuxi through art, everyday culture and historical developments.

Waterways, Architecture and History

The Qingming Bridge Historical and Cultural Block is centered around Qingming Bridge and stretches along the Grand Canal in Wuxi. The section of the canal by the bridge is 1.6 kilometers long; riverside houses and landing stages create a distinctive landscape of waterways and lanes. In 2010, the block was included in the second group of China’s historic and cultural streets. Its protected heritage includes 19 cultural heritage sites at the national, provincial and city levels, eight archways and 17 other cultural relics. Its cultural associations range from Jiangnan folk culture and waterway and lane culture to historic architecture, religion, and the history of national industry and commerce. Here, the visible structure along the canal connects with several layers of the city’s history.

Nanchan Temple also offers a sense of historical perspective: it was first built during the Southern Dynasties (420–589), while the Miaoguang Pagoda within the temple dates from the Song Dynasty (960–1279). These two dates point to different periods in the history of the buildings. The Nanchan Temple area is also a publicly accessible historic and cultural space that brings together tourism, dining, shopping and entertainment. Alongside its architecture, the area offers a broader range of visitor activities.

Lake Taihu Scenery and Seasonal Gardens

Yuantouzhu is a turtle-head-shaped peninsula on the northwest shore of Lake Taihu. The scenic area combines mountain landscapes and broad expanses of water with scattered sailboats, villages and simple, elegant Jiangnan-style gardens. A sightseeing boat trip from the Yuantouzhu pier offers views of Lake Taihu and the way mountain and water landscapes come together on Fairy Island. This combination of water and mountains gives Yuantouzhu a different focus from the city’s historic lanes and buildings.

Wuxi Plum Garden adds seasonal highlights: plum blossoms take center stage in early spring, lotus blossoms in midsummer, osmanthus flowers in autumn, and snow in winter. The plum blossom area contains cultural relics and historic sites associated with the Rong family, including China’s only plum culture museum. The Huaxi Scenic Area within the garden features more than 100 varieties of exotic flowers and plants, as well as large rock formations. The seasonal blossoms and different areas offer several specific reasons to visit, depending on whether you’re interested in garden landscapes, plants or family history.
