Lianyungang: Island Coast, Mountains and Culture
Accommodation in Lianyungang
Lianyungang offers several distinct starting points for planning a trip: exhibitions at the Lianyungang Museum, the historic urban area along Minzhu Road, and island and mountain landscapes. If you’re looking for a hotel, first consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. Then check the specific address and details for each hotel against your travel plans.
Museum and Historic Urban Areas
The Lianyungang Museum preserves more than 10,000 cultural objects. Its long-term exhibitions include topics such as local history, Han-era tomb documents, the culture surrounding the Journey to the West, and the art of stone inscriptions. Admission is permanently free. Visitors interested in different aspects of the city’s history will find several thematic perspectives under one roof.
In the city center, the 650-meter-long Old Street along Minzhu Road, formerly called Zhongshan Road, is designated a national 3A-rated tourist attraction and includes 18 municipally protected heritage sites. The publicly accessible area contains exhibition halls, including the Bell Tower History Museum, the Haizhou Good People Museum, the Folklore Museum, the Dahua Cultural Exchange Center, the Master Zhou Cunyu Art Museum, and the Municipal Intangible Cultural Heritages Museum. The operation of individual venues may change, so check the current status of the exhibition halls you plan to visit before your trip. This will help you include the historic street and the exhibitions that interest you in your travel plans.
Rock Carvings, Ruins and Mountain Landscapes
Kongwang Mountain Scenic Area is a national 4A-rated tourist attraction. Its main attractions include the ruins of the ancient city of Kongwang Mountain. The mountains there consist mainly of granite and gneiss and have a geological history spanning 1.8 billion years. The area therefore offers a distinctive connection to Earth’s history, while the ruins and rock carvings focus on historical themes.
The Buddhist rock carvings on Kongwang Mountain date from the Eastern Han period and are almost 2,000 years old. Historians call them the “first rock Buddha of the nine regions.” Also dating from the Han period, the three-dimensional stone elephant statue was carved from a block of granite. It is considered China’s largest three-dimensional stone elephant statue and the “first elephant of China.” If you are interested in both cultural history and geological features, the carvings, the statue, and the rock formations offer different ways to explore Kongwang Mountain.
Lian Island and Huaguo Mountain also offer contrasting landscapes. Lian Island Scenic Area includes Jiangsu Province’s largest rocky island, a 17.66-kilometer coastline, and an area of 8.1 square kilometers. Lian Island has been added to the newly established national list of 5A-rated tourist attractions. Huaguo Mountain Scenic Area includes Yunv Peak: at 624.4 meters, it is the highest peak in Jiangsu Province. For planning purposes, their distinguishing features are clear: Lian Island is defined by its rocky island and coastline, Huaguo Mountain by its high peak, and Kongwang Mountain by its geological history and historical heritage.
