Yancheng can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: the history of sea salt production, the memory of the New Fourth Army, cultural attractions by the water and a large park. If you are looking for a hotel in Yancheng, this selection can help you first decide on the main focus of your stay. The sites differ both in their themes and in how they present them.

Salt history and how it is presented

The China Sea Salt Museum is located in downtown Yancheng between the old salt transport channel, the Chuanchang River, and the historic Fangong Dike. It systematically presents the development of Chinese sea salt production and the history of salt transport. Wax figures, sculptures and dioramas illustrate traditional salt production methods and the lives of salt workers. The museum is the only sea salt museum in China approved by the State Council to present the history of sea salt culture. It is therefore about not only the production of a raw material, but also the people and transport routes associated with the salt tradition.

A museum dedicated to the history of the New Fourth Army

The New Fourth Army Memorial Museum is located in downtown Yancheng and is devoted to the history of the New Fourth Army. Its exhibits include seven exhibition halls, as well as a hall for generals and commanders, a calligraphy and painting gallery, and an audio-visual hall. The collection includes nearly 1,000 historical photographs and more than 800 artifacts, including weapons and equipment. The museum is a national first-class museum and is one of the city's important Red Tourism attractions. While the China Sea Salt Museum focuses on salt production and transport, this museum offers its own historical perspective on the New Fourth Army.

Culture and cuisine by the water

Visitors can sample local specialties in the shops along the riverfront of Salt Town Water Street. Huai opera can be enjoyed aboard a theater boat; performances regularly begin at 7:30 p.m. If you would like to include a performance in your evening, check the time before your visit. The performance gives your evening plans a specific time, while the riverside shops offer a culinary focus.

Nighttime boat trips on the Chuanchang River are offered in the Sea Salt Historic and Cultural Zone. They tell the story of a salt transport river that is more than 2,100 years old. Here, the river is both the subject of the story and the setting for the trip. The theater boat and the night cruise therefore offer different ways to experience the water and Yancheng's history.

Another urban attraction

Euro-style Flower Street is a European-influenced district developed as a destination for urban micro-tourism. It offers a different focus from the historical exhibitions and riverside attractions: the emphasis here is on a distinctive European-influenced urban district. It therefore offers another theme to consider, distinct from museum visits and river cruises.

Yandu Park and the old river course

Yandu Park is located in the center of Yancheng, is connected to the old course of the Chuanchang River, and covers 486 hectares. Its scale is very different from that of individual exhibition halls and museum rooms. Its connection to the river also takes a different form: the park focuses on its connection with the old river course, while the China Sea Salt Museum explores the history of salt transport and the Sea Salt Historic and Cultural Zone features nighttime boat trips on the Chuanchang River. If, when choosing where to stay, you would like to consider a large park alongside museums and evening attractions, Yandu Park offers a distinct focus.
