Taizhou offers several cultural points of interest for visitors, each with its own character: city history along the river, collections and a memorial site, a lakeside park, and a regional breakfast tradition. When planning your trip, it helps to organize these highlights according to your interests rather than reducing the city to a single attraction.

City history along the Fengcheng River

In 2013, the Chinese State Council recognized Taizhou as a national historical and cultural city. The Fengcheng River is a thousand-year-old city moat that has been comparatively well preserved. The Fengcheng River Scenic Area includes more than 30 attractions along the river, including Wanghailou, Taoyuan, Meiyuan, and a historic street. These facts point to two different scales: the designation applies to Taizhou as a city, while the specific sites along the river are individual points of interest within the Fengcheng River Scenic Area.

Collections and museum classification

The Taizhou Museum was founded in 1958. According to the cultural authority, it houses more than 10,000 artifacts, including more than 1,000 precious national cultural relics in Classes I through III. A classification published in August 2024 ranks it as a National Second-Class Museum. The figures refer to different totals: the larger one gives the museum’s entire collection, while the smaller one gives the subset of national cultural relics it contains. The classification, in turn, describes the institution’s tier and is distinct from Taizhou’s designation as a city.

Mei Lanfang Memorial Museum and Peking opera

Another way to explore cultural history is the Mei Lanfang Memorial Museum on Fenghuang Dun in Taizhou’s urban area. It is surrounded by water on three sides. The museum includes an exhibition area for historical materials and a knowledge corridor about Peking opera. Unlike the Taizhou Museum, whose collection is described through a total and a subset, the memorial museum’s themes are specifically named: historical materials and Peking opera. This lets you distinguish between a broad collection-focused perspective and a more narrowly defined connection to the performing arts.

A walk and themed gardens in Tiande Lake Park

Tiande Lake Park offers a different focus. You can walk along the lake, and the park includes a garden for Yangpai bonsai and a science museum. It also has 13 urban themed gardens built on the water. The park thus combines a lakeside walk with garden and science themes. Unlike the museums, it brings together several different park features alongside the chance to stroll by the water.

Taizhou breakfast and local food culture

Taizhou breakfast includes crab roe soup dumplings, pine nut shaomai, hot-dressed dried tofu strips, and fish soup with noodles. The dishes differ in form: alongside dumplings and shaomai, there are tofu strips and a noodle soup. The names alone distinguish the two dough-based dishes by their crab roe and pine nuts. Breakfast is therefore a distinct way to experience local food culture and adds an everyday perspective to visits to museums and the park. If you are interested in regional cuisine, these four names offer a concrete introduction to Taizhou’s breakfast tradition.
