Taiyuan brings together several clearly distinct cultural and natural themes: regional museum collections, archaeological murals, a forested mountain landscape and botany. The places differ not only in their themes but also in their form: from a comprehensive museum to an exhibition of tomb murals, as well as grottoes, botanical education programs and a water-stage performance. This gives you the opportunity to weigh up the focus of your stay before choosing a hotel.

Museums and regional cultural heritage

The Jinci Museum is located in Jinci Park in Jinci Town, Jinyuan District, Taiyuan. It is 25 kilometers from the city center. This distance is a useful point of reference when planning your visit if you are considering the museum as a destination.

The Taiyuan Museum has a different focus. As Taiyuan’s only comprehensive museum, it is dedicated to collecting, preserving, researching, exhibiting and interpreting the region’s cultural heritage. Collection and preservation sit alongside research and interpretation, so its scope goes beyond exhibiting cultural artifacts.

Murals from the Northern Qi era

A distinctive archaeological focus is the Taiyuan Northern Qi Mural Museum. It stands on 1,400-year-old remains from the Northern Qi era, with the tomb of Xu Xianxiu as its central theme. In three exhibition halls, the museum brings together murals from four high-ranking Northern Qi tombs in Shanxi: the tomb of Xu Xianxiu, the tomb of Lou Rui, the tomb of Jiuyuangang and the tomb of Shuiquanliang.

The museum uses VR, 3D displays that do not require special glasses, and panoramic animations to create an immersive presentation. The central focus on Xu Xianxiu and the murals from a total of four tombs give the exhibition two points of reference: one tomb as its main theme and a broader selection of Northern Qi-era murals.

Tianlongshan: Grottoes and mountain landscape

The Tianlongshan Grottoes comprise 30 caves and more than 100 historical relics. These include grottoes, historic buildings, tomb pagodas, inscriptions, sculptures and murals. The range therefore extends from buildings and written records to sculptural and painted works. Unlike the Northern Qi Museum’s focus, the Tianlongshan heritage encompasses several types of historical relics.

Tianlongshan itself is a forested mountain landscape with springs, temples and grottoes. Forest and water are just as much a part of its description as the temples and caves. Alongside the individual historical relics, the landscape itself is therefore a central theme—a different perspective from the museums, which focus on exhibition halls and collections.

Botany and educational programs

The Taiyuan Botanical Garden adds botany to the museum and landscape themes. In 2022, its collection comprised more than 4,500 plant species, including 83 endangered species. Also in 2022, the garden had a science outreach team, offered study and learning courses, and held a variety of nature education programs. Its species collection and educational work provide a distinct focus alongside the museums’ cultural history and Tianlongshan’s mountain landscape.

Water-stage performance in Jinyuan

The large-scale water-stage performance “Dream of Jinyang” is located in the southeastern part of the Jinyang Lake protected area in Jinyuan District, Taiyuan. As a performance, it differs from the museums, grottoes and educational programs. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, check the performance dates in advance.
