Discover Xinzhou: History and Culture
Accommodation in Xinzhou
History of the Ancient City
Xinzhou Ancient City gives your trip a historical focus. It was founded in 215 AD during the Eastern Han dynasty and reconstructed, based on research, to reflect its original Ming-dynasty appearance. Its founding and reconstructed form therefore point to different periods: 215 AD marks its origins, while the Ming dynasty provides the historical reference for its reconstructed appearance. This distinction helps place the ancient city’s long history in context.
Temple and Academy
Caishen Temple offers a glimpse of another historical layer. It was founded during the Yongle era of the Ming dynasty; most of the buildings that survive today date from a 1845 renovation during the Daoguang era of the Qing dynasty. On June 6, 2007, it was designated a municipally protected cultural relic. The founding, renovation, and protected status represent different milestones: the founding marks the temple’s beginnings, the renovation shaped most of the surviving buildings, and the 2007 designation added a later layer of protection to its history.
Xiurong Academy is a notable attraction within the ancient city. It sits on a hill in the southwest and offers views across the entire ancient city. A themed exhibition hall described in 2023 at the Xiurong Academy Museum is titled “A Century of Splendor.” If you specifically want to see this exhibition, check its current status in advance. The view across the city makes the academy’s setting a different point of interest from the temple’s architectural history: here, the location stands out, while the temple’s history centers on its founding and surviving structures.
Crafts, Performances, and Cuisine
The ancient city has shops featuring intangible cultural heritage crafts such as wood carving, fired gourd bottles, and distinctive paper-cutting. These crafts add a cultural dimension to the city’s architectural highlights. Individual shops’ offerings may change. If you are looking for a particular craft, check in advance whether it is currently available.
A performance of the intangible cultural heritage art of iron flowers drew many visitors who stopped to watch. Unlike the architectural history and historic buildings, the focus here is on a performance. If you specifically want to plan for this performance, check in advance whether and when it is held.
Local dishes in the ancient city include Hongmian Yuyu, Yiwosu, and oat noodle nests. If you would like to try one of these specialties, check what is currently available in advance; individual vendors’ offerings may change.
When deciding how to structure your trip, it helps to distinguish the city’s history from its other attractions: the ancient city brings together its founding, the temple, and the academy; crafts, a performance, and local specialties complement its historical focus with other cultural interests.
