Discover Yueyang
Accommodation in Yueyang
Yueyang offers a range of attractions for travelers interested in architecture, cultural history, and landscapes. Yueyang Tower and Junshan Island represent architectural and island themes; the East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve is part of the wider region. If you are looking for a hotel in Yueyang, you can prioritize these highlights according to your travel interests.
Yueyang Tower: Architecture and Design
Yueyang Tower is 19.42 meters tall and built entirely of wood. Its helmet-shaped roof is unique in China. Four rows of columns, twelve corridor columns, and 20 roof-eave columns support the building. The height describes its dimensions, while the three column counts detail its supporting structure. In the wider region, the tower measures 17.24 meters wide and has an area of 250.66 square meters. Width and area describe different dimensions from the tower’s height.
The Yueyang Tower Scenic Area offers views of the lake from the west bank of Dongting Lake. Together with the Pavilion of Prince Teng and the Yellow Crane Tower, it is one of the three great towers of Jiangnan. Of the three, only the Yueyang Tower Scenic Area retains its original Qing Dynasty structure.
Cultural Sites in the Wider Region
The Yueyang Tower Scenic Area covers 670 mu (about 44.7 hectares). It is divided into an administrative area, which is closed to protect cultural relics, and an open recreational area. Attractions include Sanzui Pavilion, Xiao Qiao’s tomb, Zhanyue Gate, Bianhe Street, and Lv Dongbin’s Temple. Sanzui Pavilion is north of Yueyang Tower. It was built in 1775 and rebuilt in 1867; during this reconstruction, the building was given the name Sanzui Pavilion.
The two architectural histories have different emphases: the original Qing Dynasty structure has been preserved at the Yueyang Tower Scenic Area, while the reconstruction and associated naming in 1867 are central to the story of Sanzui Pavilion.
Junshan Island and Its Landscape
Junshan Island is a small island in Dongting Lake, covering 0.98 square kilometers and featuring 72 peaks. It lies twelve kilometers from the shore, opposite Yueyang Tower. The distance from shore and the position opposite the tower describe two distinct relationships: the first situates the island relative to the shore, while the second relates it to the tower. In the Junshan Island scenic area, you can walk among green trees and red maple trees and enjoy the autumn air and clear water. The island is thus characterized both by specific geographic details and by an explicitly autumnal impression of the landscape.
Nature Conservation and Transport Geography
The East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve was established in 1982 and upgraded to a national nature reserve in 1994 with the approval of the State Council. Twelve years separate its establishment from its subsequent upgrade. Yueyang’s transport network includes the Beijing–Guangzhou Railway, the Beijing–Zhuhai Expressway, National Highway 107, and the Yangtze River. These transport routes offer a different frame of reference from the cultural and landscape themes of the attractions.
