Cameroon’s West Region offers a range of highlights for your trip: an interpretation centre in Dschang, tea plantations near the town, water sports on the town lake, and waterfall and crater landscapes. Dschang and Bafoussam provide specific locations, while Lake Baleng adds a landscape perspective.

Culture and Tea Around Dschang

The Musée des Civilisations in Dschang is an interpretation centre of around 1,200 m² devoted to Cameroon’s history and cultural diversity. Its symbolic contemporary architecture and location on the banks of the town lake give the site a distinctive setting. Its focus is on history and cultural diversity, while the architecture adds a contemporary touch.

Near Dschang, the Djuttitsa tea plantations offer walks among the rows of tea bushes, factory visits and tastings. Factory visits cover four stages of processing: withering, rolling, oxidation and drying. The sequence runs from withering to drying; the tasting complements the look at production with a flavour experience. Before your trip, check which activities are available at the time of your visit.

Lakes, Waterfalls and Water Sports

Lake Baleng lies at an altitude of 1,500 m and fills a crater 800 m wide. It is considered the best-known lake in Cameroon’s West Region. The altitude and the crater’s width describe different aspects of the site: its position in the landscape and the crater’s extent.

The Métché Waterfalls, on the outskirts of Bafoussam, are around 40 to 50 m high. They are also regarded as an important site of remembrance and for Bamiléké rituals. This natural landmark brings landscape and cultural significance together. The approximate height provides a sense of scale, while its association with remembrance and ritual offers another way to understand the site.

At Dschang’s town lake, the water sports centre offers activities open to everyone, including pedal- and motorboat rides, canoeing, kayaking and children’s games. There are several different activities to choose from at the lake. As operating conditions can change, check which activities are available before visiting.

These are distinct from kayaking trips on the Noun, which the Dschang water sports club organises along a route with Class 1 to 2 rapids. The route and its specifically stated rapids classification are an important part of this activity. Check current dates and availability before planning your trip.

Plan your search around which of these places you would like to include in your trip.

Cameroon in a Wider Context

In the wider destination of Cameroon, the Korup Biosphere Reserve is located in the Southwest Region. It is characterised by evergreen lowland forest, with landscapes ranging from foothill and swamp forests to submontane slopes on granite peaks. The Ngondo traditions of the Sawa community are also part of Cameroon’s cultural context. They are based on the veneration of water oracles and take place annually from September until the first Sunday in December. Check the specific dates for the year in question.
