Adamawa is characterized by highlands, mountain ranges, and crater lakes. The Adamaoua Plateau lies between 1,000 and 2,000 meters; its average elevation is about 1,100 meters. This range gives the landscape a clear elevation profile, while mountains and lakes provide further distinctive landmarks.

Plateau, Mountains, and Elevation Differences

The Gotel and Mambila Mountains lie along the border with Nigeria. They consist mostly of granite, as well as crystalline and metamorphic rocks such as mica, schist, and gneiss. The plateau’s elevation is therefore complemented by named mountain ranges and a varied composition of rocks. If you want to understand the landscape not only through viewpoints but also through its geology, these details offer a concrete starting point.

Tchabal Mbabo is in the Gotel Mountains and, at 3,400 meters, is the highest peak in the Adamawa region. In contrast to the plateau, this figure describes a single peak, whereas the plateau’s elevation is given as a range and an approximate average. This distinction helps put the figures in context: a plateau and the highest mountain represent different scales of the terrain.

Crater Lakes and Protected Areas

Numerous crater lakes are the result of the region’s long volcanic history. Near Ngaoundéré are Lake Tison and Lake Mbalang, two of Adamawa’s best-known crater lakes. This connects a regional geological context with two specifically named lakes that serve as landmarks around Ngaoundéré.

Mbam et Djerem National Park covers 4,165 km² and extends across the Adamawa and East regions. Its stated area and extent make it a regional landmark spanning more than one region. Its geographic scale therefore differs from that of individual lakes and peaks.

Locating Places Geographically

Lake Pagnéré is a tourist site in the Adamawa region, in Djérem Department and the municipality of Tibati. The Source de la Sanaga tourist site is also in Adamawa, in Mbéré Department and the municipality of Meiganga. The different department and municipality details help distinguish the two places geographically.

Cameroon in Broader Perspective

The wider destination of Cameroon offers other landscapes with different characteristics. The Korup Biosphere Reserve in Cameroon’s Southwest Region is characterized by evergreen lowland forest; its landscape ranges from foothill and swamp forests to submontane slopes on granite peaks. In the Waza Biosphere Reserve in Cameroon’s Far North Region, the landscape is shaped by Yaéré floodplains with perennial grasses. In addition, Sangha Trinational in Cameroon includes Lobéké National Park as one of three contiguous national parks. Wildlife is also part of the landscape. The Cross River gorilla and Preuss’s red colobus live in the Korup Reserve.
