When planning a trip to Bafoussam, it is useful to distinguish between cultural sites in the city and other attractions across the wider West destination. The chiefdom, a craft center and a cultural center give Bafoussam a clear cultural focus. Across the West destination, museums, lake and water landscapes, and activities at tea plantations and on the water add to the range of things to explore. If you are looking for a hotel in Bafoussam, these differences can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your stay.

Cultural sites in Bafoussam

The Bafoussam Chiefdom is located in the center of Bafoussam. It is estimated to be around 800 years old, and its architecture includes 13 pyramid-shaped roofs. This combines historical significance with a clearly identifiable architectural feature. Those interested in history and architectural styles will find two distinct points of interest here.

The Village Artisanal Régional de Bafoussam (VARBAF) includes shops, training workshops, production spaces and permanent exhibition rooms. This mix of facilities gives it a broader profile than a single exhibition space: training and production are part of it too. The Centre culturel Pierre Moyo in Bafoussam offers a different focus and includes the art gallery “Galerie Princesse.”

The three sites can be distinguished by their focus: the chiefdom represents history and architecture, VARBAF represents crafts and a range of functions, and the cultural center includes a named art gallery. This lets you explore the city’s cultural offerings according to your interests, without treating them as interchangeable.

The Métché Waterfalls are located in the wider West destination, just outside Bafoussam, and are approximately 40 to 50 m high. They are also considered an important place of remembrance and a site for Bamiléké rituals. Here, a specific landscape feature is paired with a cultural connection.

Activities listed at the Djuttitsa tea plantations near Dschang, also within the wider West destination, include walks between the tea rows, factory visits and tastings. Factory visits cover four processing stages: withering, rolling, oxidation and drying. The topic of tea therefore encompasses both the plantations and the processing.

At the town lake in Dschang, the watersports center offers pedal boat and motorboat trips open to everyone, as well as canoeing, kayaking and children’s games. The Dschang watersports club organizes kayak trips on the Noun, a route with class 1 to 2 rapids. The center at the town lake and the club trips on the Noun therefore differ in location and the activities described. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, check current availability or operating conditions in advance.
