Vienna offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay: walking trails to attractions, nature topics, and local history. Trek Vienna invites you to explore the city’s nature, leisure opportunities, and history. The walking trails lead to numerous attractions; along the way, visitors can use their smartphones to access information about places along the route. This brings exercise and themed insights together.

Walking Trails and Orientation

Trek Vienna’s trails lead to attractions in the city. The information visitors can access on their smartphones along the way relates to attractions along the route. This also lets you combine a walk with an interest in particular places or historical topics.

One place to get information about topics and orientation is the Trek Vienna Pavilion. There, 14 panels provide information about nature, hiking, and history. An interactive kiosk offers additional information. Parking spaces and park benches are available next to the pavilion. The site also features three wooden photo backdrops with figures for children’s photos.

The various information features focus on different topics: the panels cover nature, hiking, and history, while the kiosk provides additional information. Practical amenities and photo backdrops are also available at the same location.

Vienna’s History and Its Remnants

Vienna’s settlement history began in 1794. That year, Dr. Joseph Spencer received a land grant of 5,000 acres, with which the settlement is associated. Vienna was incorporated as a city in 1935. Charles R. Blair was the first mayor. These milestones mark different periods in the city’s history: its beginnings as a settlement, its later incorporation as a city, and the first mayoral term.

Trek Vienna also covers artifacts from the Vienna area attributed to early populations. These are complemented by historical documents about early settlers. They include trade and location maps, as well as documents signed by early settlers. Those interested in history will find both archaeological topics and written records in the project’s content.

Transportation history offers another perspective on Vienna’s development. In the late 19th century, tracks for an electric railway were part of the city’s development. The line ran between Parkersburg to the south and Marietta to the north.

Nature, Garden, and Hiking Trails

The Pollinator Garden has a walking path and park benches. For the 2026 program year, it is described as having numerous nectar-producing plants. The garden combines a path through the grounds with a specific nature topic. For visitors who would like to include nature and plants in their plans alongside local history, it offers another point of interest.

The McDonough Wildlife Refuge near Vienna combines a wildlife refuge with a public park. A map of the hiking trails is available for the refuge. It provides a point of reference if you want to explore the trails shown there. The refuge and the Pollinator Garden have different focuses: the former centers on a wildlife refuge and public park, while the latter features a walking path and nectar-producing plants.

A Vienna Trail Network for cycling and walking is also mapped. The Regional Planning Commission currently provides a map for it; routes and connections may be updated. If you use this map for planning, check the routes and connections shown. The Vienna Trail Network is a separate way to find your bearings, alongside information about Trek Vienna and the McDonough Wildlife Refuge.

Events as a Reason to Travel

The Freedom Festival is a family-friendly event celebrating Independence Day. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the event dates and the program for the relevant year. Specific program items may change from one edition to the next.
