Mount Storm combines Mount Storm Lake with specific opportunities on the water: fishing, boating, and scuba diving each come with different conditions. Mountain Top Park is also a local feature. Historical traces range from the route later known as The Pack Road to a 1927 account of maple sugar production.

Mount Storm Lake and its Water Activities

Mount Storm Lake is a 1,200-acre reservoir on the Stony River, a tributary of the North Branch of the Potomac River. Water circulated through the power plant keeps the lake at about 60°F. This adds information about the lake’s temperature to its size and geographic location.

At Mount Storm Lake, the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources leases a 4.6-acre area from Dominion Energy for fishing, launching boats, and parking. The two acreage figures refer to different things: 1,200 acres is the size of the reservoir, while 4.6 acres is the size of the leased area for these uses. If you are planning one of these activities at the lake, you can distinguish between the entire body of water and the specifically designated area.

Boating with unlimited horsepower is permitted on Mount Storm Lake. Check the current lake rules before launching. A boat ramp is located near the dam; check its current status before heading there. The information about the ramp and the permission to boat answer two different practical questions: where the ramp is located and what engine power is permitted for boating.

The scuba diving area has its own access conditions: it must be reached by a launched pontoon boat or another suitable boat. Direct entry from shore is not permitted. If you are planning to scuba dive, take this boat access into account and confirm the applicable conditions before participating.

Getting There and Other Local Features

From US Route 50, you can reach Mount Storm Lake via WV Route 42 and WV Route 93. Because road conditions and access rules can change, check this information before traveling. On land, Mountain Top Park in Mount Storm has playground equipment. In addition to the lake’s water-based activities, this provides information about a local park facility.

Historical Traces in Mount Storm

The route later known as The Pack Road ran from Moorefield through Mount Storm and Gormania to settlements on the Cheat and Buckhannon Rivers. It was the first simple route for emigrants crossing the Allegheny Mountains. Its historical account connects several places with settlements on the two rivers and places Mount Storm on a route across the Alleghenies.

A 1927 account describes maple sugar groves on numerous properties around Mount Storm. Substantial quantities of maple sugar and molasses were produced from them. This historical account highlights a different aspect of the area than The Pack Road: here, the focus is on groves and the production of goods on properties; there, it is on the route from Moorefield through Mount Storm and Gormania.
