Philippi’s history offers several specific points of interest for a visit: the Covered Bridge, the Historic District, and the history of the Civil War. The Tygart Valley River and mountain biking trails add outdoor activities to the mix.

Covered Bridge and Civil War History

The Philippi Covered Bridge was completed in 1852 and today also serves as an important traffic link on US 250. It is a two-lane, 286-foot-long Long-Truss bridge. This structure brings together a historic construction date and a present-day transportation function.

On June 3, 1861, the first land battle of the American Civil War took place in Philippi. The story of James Hanger is also connected with this event: after his leg was amputated as a result of the battle, he designed and built an articulated prosthetic leg. The Civil War history therefore encompasses both the event itself and Hanger’s subsequent development. The dates put the two points of reference in context: the bridge was completed in 1852, and the battle took place in 1861. This helps distinguish the bridge’s history from the events of the Civil War chronologically.

Historic District and Museum

The Philippi Historic District is roughly bounded by Pike, High, Walnut, Wolfe, Main, and Wilson Streets, as well as the Tygart Valley River. This helps you locate the historic district; the boundaries listed are approximate.

Exhibits at the Barbour County Historical Museum span the period from 1635 through the Civil War and the early 20th century to the present day. This time span provides a broad historical context for a visit. Since exhibits may change, check what is currently on display if a particular focus is important to your trip.

River, Outdoor Activities, and Event

The Philippi–Arden section of the Buckhannon & Tygart Valley River Water Trail includes flatwater and Class I/II rapids. The appropriate paddling level may vary with conditions, so take current conditions into account when planning. You can also experience Philippi from a different perspective on the Tygart Valley River. Check conditions and access in advance. The class rating applies to the rapids, while the section also includes flatwater; it does not describe all water areas across the board.

Outdoor options in Philippi and the surrounding area include mountain biking trails. Along with river activities, land-based pursuits can therefore be another focus for your trip planning.

Lurch Fest takes place annually in Philippi on the first Saturday in August. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the dates and program for the day in question, as both may change.
