Long Beach can be planned around a range of interests: the Discovery Trail links hiking and cycling, the beach defines the coastal landscape, and museums focus on kites, curiosities, and cranberries. When looking for a hotel in Long Beach, you can start by deciding which themes you want to shape your stay. An outdoor outing, a detour over the dunes, collections, and a festival all differ in form and content. Organize your plans according to whether you’d most like to experience a route, the coastal landscape, museum themes, or an event program.

Discovery Trail and Boardwalk

The Discovery Trail ends in Long Beach. At 8.5 miles long, it is a hiking and cycling trail named after the Corps of Discovery. It is paved for the most part and has several access points. Its length helps you include the trail as a dedicated activity in your travel plans, while the access points offer different places to start. The Long Beach Boardwalk runs over the dunes and can be reached by taking a detour from the Discovery Trail. This lets you plan the boardwalk as a specific addition to the trail. Its route over the dunes provides a different experience from the mostly paved trail, which is designed for hiking and cycling.

Beach and Coastal Landscape

In some places, the beach in Long Beach is wide enough to drive on. Its firm sand stretches to the horizon in both directions. Compared with the Discovery Trail, the focus here is on the sandy expanse, while the trail is defined by hiking and cycling and its mostly paved surface. You can weigh the coastal landscape and the trail as different priorities for your trip.

Museums with Distinct Themes

The World Kite Museum’s collection includes 300 Japanese kites and is considered the most comprehensive collection of its kind outside Japan. The museum also preserves the history of kite flying. The collection and historical focus give a visit a clear theme: kites are both tangible objects and the subject of a preserved history.

Marsh's Free Museum has been collecting curiosities, antiques, and other unusual objects for more than 100 years. On display is Jake the Alligator Man, a mummified hybrid figure that is half human and half alligator. This gives the museum a different collection focus from the World Kite Museum: unusual objects and a specifically named exhibit rather than kites and the history of kite flying.

The Cranberry Museum offers a self-guided outdoor tour of a cranberry bog. Check the tour’s current availability before your visit. Unlike the two collections, this experience takes you outdoors; its focus is the cranberry bog, which you explore on your own.

Festival: Chowder and Clamming

The annual Clam Chowder Taste-Off is part of the Long Beach Razor Clam and Shellfish Festival. Local restaurants compete for the Best Chowder Trophy, and judges evaluate homemade clam chowder recipes. Experienced clammers share tips and tricks as part of the festival program. So alongside the culinary competition, the program also includes advice on clamming. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the current event dates.
