Pacific County brings together the Pacific Coast, the landscape of Willapa Bay and a distinctive coastal history. The county has 28 miles of Pacific coastline. The bay has a different character from the open ocean: estuaries, bird habitats and the history of oyster farming are as much a part of the region as its lighthouse and coastal defenses.

Coastal Views at Cape Disappointment

Cape Disappointment State Park is a 2,023-acre camping park on the Long Beach Peninsula. It sits on the Pacific Ocean, overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River. At North Head Lighthouse, visitors can explore the grounds or climb to the top of the lighthouse. From there, they can see the Pacific Ocean, the Long Beach Peninsula, the Columbia River Bar and the northern Oregon coast. The lighthouse remains active and helps guide navigation through the dangerous waters below Cape Disappointment. This makes the site both a visitor attraction and a continuing navigational aid.

Another highlight at Cape Disappointment is the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. It tells the story of Lewis and Clark and their journey to the Pacific Ocean. Visitors interested in the coast not only as a landscape but also in its exploration history can find a different perspective here than at the lighthouse.

Willapa Bay and Nature Trails

Willapa Bay is one of the most pristine and biologically diverse estuaries in the contiguous 48 U.S. states. The landscape at Willapa National Wildlife Refuge provides habitat for more than 200 bird species. This is an important distinction between a natural habitat and wildlife observation: the number describes the diversity of the habitat, not the sighting of particular species on any one visit.

Fort Columbia State Park also combines nature and history. It is considered one of the best-preserved historic coastal defense installations in the United States. Birdwatching is also possible there, and the park has miles of forested hiking trails. The South Bay Trail offers a different experience: it runs through grasslands, coastal forests, and freshwater and estuarine wetlands, with views of Willapa Bay. This trail is accessible on foot only.

For a longer outing, there is also a 56-mile multi-use trail from Chehalis to South Bend, suitable for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The routes differ mainly in their intended uses: the South Bay Trail is a walking trail through varied wetland and forest landscapes, while the trail to South Bend accommodates several ways of getting around.

History on Willapa Bay

At the Oysterville Historic District, visitors can pick up a walking-tour brochure at the Oysterville Church. The district was selected for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

The Willapa Bay Interpretive Center presents the history of oyster farming on Willapa Bay through artifacts, photographs and a 20-minute video presentation. A replica of a home belonging to oyster fishers and their families is also on display. The terrace offers views of the bay and shoreline, along with opportunities for wildlife watching. At the Shoalwater Bay Museum, a different object takes center stage: a historic canoe almost 27 feet long. Together, these sites showcase different aspects of regional history—from oyster farming to a single large collection piece.
