The Catharine Furnace Ruins recall ironworks that operated in the 1830s and 1840s. In Spotsylvania County, landmarks like these sit alongside hiking trails, museums, and places where the region’s history comes to life. Parks, bodies of water, and wineries also offer different ways to shape your stay.

Battlefields, History, and Cultural Heritage

Ellwood, a former slave plantation, is located in the Wilderness Battlefield. The Wilderness Exhibit Shelter is open from sunrise to sunset and features outdoor exhibits. If you’d like to explore on foot, the Federal Line Trail offers a 7.2-mile (11.6-kilometer) loop. It runs along the Union line and passes preserved earthworks and artillery positions.

At the First Day of Chancellorsville Battlefield, you’ll find informational panels and a network of recreational hiking trails. At Bloody Angle, several paths wind around the monuments and into the area. Christ Episcopal Church offers another perspective on the past: it served as a hospital during the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, and damage from shelling is still visible today. Old Berea Christian Church is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The African American Heritage Trail is a self-guided, 75-mile driving tour with twelve stops in the county. The John J. Wright Museum is another cultural destination. It explores John J. Wright’s influence on the education of local students, as well as the contributions of African American residents to the county’s history, growth, and development. The stops cover different topics: the trail connects sites along a longer route, while the museum focuses on education and local history.

Hiking Trails, Parks, and Water

Arritt Park is in southern Spotsylvania County and covers 26.5 acres. Deciduous and pine forests, along with a marshy pond, define the area. Loriella Park has walking trails, including a 2.9-mile trail, and an 18-hole disc golf course. For planning purposes, you can choose between two different ways to enjoy the outdoors: a trail through a wooded, waterside area or walking trails and disc golf in a park.

The Ni River Recreational Area offers boat rentals, a picnic shelter, and access to about 410 acres of water. Boat rentals are seasonal. Check the season if you’d like to include a boat rental in your plans.

Train Rides and Tasty Excursions

The Rappahannock Railroad Museum displays historic railroad artifacts and train exhibits in two outbuildings. It also offers a 45-minute ride on the open-air Little Yellow Train. The route runs for one mile to the RF&P main line. Visiting the museum and taking the train ride are different ways to explore railroad history: the exhibits are inside the museum, while the ride takes you out to the main line.

For wine tours, the Spotsylvania Wine Trail connects five stops throughout the county; participating locations may change. Lake Anna Winery has vineyards on a 76-acre estate. Its tasting room offers 13 wines and information about the winemaking process. Wilderness Run Vineyards is a historically significant farm winery that produces wines from its own grapes. 1781 Brewing Company serves farmhouse ale brewed on site. A. Smith Bowman Distillery has been based in a historic complex in the county since 1988 and offers free tours and tastings. Check the availability of these tours and tastings before your trip.
