Falls Church: History, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Falls Church
Different interests come together in Falls Church: historic houses and sites recall various chapters in the city’s history, while the Eden Center brings Vietnamese culture into view. Markets, public art, and green landscapes round out the picture. If you’re planning a hotel stay, you can shape your trip around these interests and decide in advance which activities matter most.
History in houses, places, and along trails
Cherry Hill Farmhouse was added to both the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Three years later, in 1976, it opened as a historic house museum. The complex includes a Greek Revival-style house and a barn dating from the mid-19th century. Tours and educational programs share the history and architecture of the buildings.
At Tinner Hill Historic Park, the Zig Zag Monument follows the original course of racial segregation in Falls Church. Tinner Hill is also considered the site where the first rural branch of the NAACP in the United States was founded. The monument and the story of its founding give this place significance beyond local city history.
The Falls Church also connects a specific building with national history: the brick church standing today dates from 1769. The Declaration of Independence was read from its steps in 1776. The exhibit at South Washington Street Plaza offers a different historical perspective: its History Panels trace the development of transportation in Falls Church across eight distinct eras.
Those interested in personal recollections can find more than 120 oral history interviews in the Falls Church History Room. H. H. Douglas and the Falls Church Historical Commission recorded them between the late 1960s and 1981. A historic trail in Fort Taylor Park is marked with signs about Fort Taylor and Taylor’s Tavern. The State Theatre, meanwhile, opened in 1936; following a restoration in the late 1990s, it became a venue for live music and private events.
Vietnamese culture, art, and market life
The Eden Center is home to more than 120 family-run businesses, including restaurants, shops, supermarkets, jewelry stores, and travel agencies. Its clock tower is an exact replica of a clock tower in downtown Saigon. The center hosts an annual Táşżt festival and a Moon Festival. Together, its architecture, festivals, and range of businesses give the place a distinctive cultural character.
Discover public art on the self-guided Falls Church Art Walk, which features more than 40 installations. The walk offers a distinctive way to experience the city, with the artworks themselves taking center stage. Travelers who prefer to explore history through buildings and memorial sites will find a different focus at Cherry Hill, Tinner Hill, and The Falls Church.
The Falls Church Farmers Market has more than 50 stalls. Vendors offer seasonal fruits and vegetables, meat, cheese, baked goods, flowers, plants, and specialty products. There is also a monthly Chef Series, in which local chefs present recipes and tastings featuring ingredients from the market. The market ranges from fresh produce to prepared samples, while each installment of the series highlights its own culinary themes.
Green trails and getting around
The Washington and Old Dominion Trail runs east to west through the northern part of Falls Church and offers opportunities for hiking, skating, and cycling. Howard E. Herman Stream Valley Park reveals a different side of the landscape: it is densely wooded and crossed by a stream. In a degraded riparian forest, volunteers worked with Earth Sangha and city staff to prevent invasive species from becoming established again across about two acres; they planted 5,300 native plants.
Falls Church is accessible via two Metro stations. Check current connections before you travel. When choosing a hotel, you can start by prioritizing what you plan to do: visit historic sites, explore art, shop at the market, enjoy nature, or use the Metro. When searching for a specific hotel, check that its location suits your plans rather than assuming that the various options form a single, unified city itinerary.
