Lynchburg offers a range of ways to plan your days around nature, history and culture. Outdoors, trails with different profiles take center stage: the Blackwater Creek Trail is paved and suitable for several activities, while the Creekside Trail follows the creek through a steep-sided valley and offers opportunities for wildlife watching. Historic Sandusky combines a film, a house tour and a museum; Point of Honor has daily visiting hours for its grounds. The downtown campus of the Academy Center of the Arts features performances, exhibitions and art classes. You can use these specific differences to decide which parts of your trip matter most.

Trails and Nature Watching

The Blackwater Creek Trail is three miles long and paved. It runs through an urban forest and is suitable for jogging, walking and cycling. Both the trail’s surface and the range of activities it accommodates are part of its profile.

The Creekside Trail follows Blackwater Creek for about five miles through a steep-sided creek valley. It offers opportunities for birdwatching and year-round wildlife watching. By comparison, this trail is longer than the three-mile Blackwater Creek Trail. The features described also differ: here, the creek, the valley and nature watching are highlights, alongside the paved forest trail and the activities listed for the Blackwater Creek Trail. If you choose trails based on scenery and opportunities for wildlife watching, Creekside offers a different focus from the Blackwater Creek Trail.

Historic Sandusky and Point of Honor

A visit to Historic Sandusky includes an approximately 15-minute video about the Battle of Lynchburg, a 30- to 45-minute house tour and a visit to a small museum. The video and tour take approximately 45 to 60 minutes in total; the museum visit is also part of the experience. This gives you an estimate for two parts of the visit when planning your time. Check the current visitor information in advance, as appointment requirements may change.

The four-acre grounds of Point of Honor are open to visitors from morning until evening, 365 days a year. The times of day are what matter for planning here; unlike the tour at Historic Sandusky, opening hours are given for the grounds. As access information may change, check the latest information before your visit.

Arts and Events Downtown

The downtown campus of the Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg includes the restored Historic Academy of Music Theatre, dating to 1905, a black-box theater, a ceramics studio and several art galleries. These different spaces are part of one campus and give the arts center several cultural focal points.

The Academy Center of the Arts hosts live concerts, plays, comedy shows and visual art exhibitions. It also offers art classes for all ages throughout the year. The program therefore includes both events for audiences and classes. If you want to attend a specific concert, performance, exhibition or class, check the latest schedule. This lets you plan around a specific event date, while the art classes are another part of the program described as available year-round.

Lynchburg’s offerings therefore differ not only by subject, but also in how you can plan for them: the trails emphasize trail features and nature watching, the stated durations at Historic Sandusky help you plan your time, and Point of Honor has daily visiting hours. The cultural program adds events and classes to these options.
