In Lynchburg, sites connected to Civil War history meet museums, cultural offerings and trails by the water. Sandusky served as Union headquarters during the Battle of Lynchburg. Restoration and interpretation reflect the appearance of the estate between 1850 and 1870—a specific timeframe for understanding this historic site.

History in Homes and the Cityscape

Point of Honor combines a historic home with extensive grounds. Tours of the house, the kitchen, and the grounds are offered on select Saturdays from March through December and at other times by appointment. The four-acre grounds are open to visitors 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset. The house was restored between 1976 and 1978 and opened as a public museum.

Fort Early also tells the story of the battle: this earthwork fort from the American Civil War is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and played an important role in Lynchburg’s outer defenses. Monument Terrace, by contrast, is part of the cityscape today: its sequence of terraces and pedestrian steps extends for a city block between Church Street and Court Street.

Visits for tours of the Anne Spencer House Museum and Anne Spencer Garden are arranged by appointment. The garden and the first floor of the Anne Spencer House and Cottage are accessible to visitors with mobility impairments.

Museums, Remembrance and Culture

The Legacy Museum of African American History dedicates its exhibits to African American heritage. Its mission includes collecting, preserving and safeguarding historical artifacts, documents and keepsakes relating to the significant contributions of the African American community in Lynchburg and the surrounding area. This brings both the city’s history and the contributions of the surrounding community into focus.

The Lynchburg Museum is the city’s official visitor center and is located in the historic Old Court House. Admission to the Lynchburg Museum & Visitor Center is free for all visitors. Those interested in the performing arts will find a restored historic theater with 800 seats at the Academy Center of the Arts. Its year-round program also includes a flexible black box theater.

A Look at the Local Market

The Lynchburg Community Market brings together farm produce and handcrafted goods. The farmers represented there come from within a 100-mile radius. Offerings include produce, plants, pasture-raised meat, eggs and artisan cheese; the selection of vendors may change. This offers a glimpse of Lynchburg that extends beyond its attractions to products from the region.

Trails and Outdoor Activities

The Blackwater Creek Trail is three miles long, paved and runs along Blackwater Creek. It was created on a disused railroad line and is suitable for jogging, walking and cycling. The Blackwater Creek Natural Area is a linear greenbelt with paved and unpaved trails for hikers, cyclists and runners. The two descriptions therefore differ both in surface and in the range of trails mentioned.

Another option is the Ruskin Freer Loop Trail: the walking-only loop lies within a 115-acre nature preserve. Five interpretive signs and 36 plant-identification markers supplement the trail. In contrast to the paved trail along the creek, the Ruskin Freer Loop is designed for walking and learning about the surroundings.

On the James River and its tributaries, visitors to Lynchburg can cycle, hike, paddle, run, fish and watch birds. The activities range from land-based recreation to water activities and nature observation.

Year-Round Activities

Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre offers mountain activities to the public year-round. Tubing and skiing are available there in every season, and lessons are also offered on year-round, snow-free slopes. Rise Up Climbing has 40-foot climbing walls with auto belays. Together, these offerings provide different ways to enjoy an active visit without being limited to a particular season.

For planning your day, Lynchburg’s highlights can be easily grouped into historic homes and museums, cultural events, trails for different uses, and activities on the river. For guided visits, check the relevant schedules and conditions: Point of Honor offers tours on select Saturdays from March through December and at other times by appointment; visits for tours of the Anne Spencer House Museum and Anne Spencer Garden are arranged by appointment.
